Review Of Digitech BP200

Matthew Rixson (April 26, 2007)
Rating: 8/10

Once received through the post I opened the box and first impression, "wow this is heavy", picking up the bp200 I flipped it over to look at the quality of the build, and for a semi-professional device like this it is built extremely well. After removing the packaging I immediately plugged it into my amp grabbed my bass and started playing, I could not believe how much fun I could get out of this device, if your a fan of all things distortion/synth/odd then this will keep you amused. After cycling through the set of tones i preceded to try out the expression foot pedal, it is a good solid build that won't slip under foot when in use, though the size may not feel comfortable to some users and it may feel that you need some force to get it moving initially. The range that can be obtained when using this expression pedal is remarkable and is also customisable, if you have found a sweet spot of ranges you want to play between set the expression pedal to work between these two and play away. If your coming to a bass solo or want to whammy up an octave and want to get the effect just right let your foot do the work and you'll be amazed at how responsive this device can be.
Ok, so what was next on the agenda, the drum machine. It is not a full complete range of styles by any means, however it will allow you to keep time, change your bpm easily. However, don't think that the drum set patterns will be anything magnificent.
The display is quite clear, though not having played at a gig with this particular piece of equipment, how stage lighting would affect your vision onto the screen may be an issue. In all honesty this seems a device you would use in the studio where you have time to set up what you want and have time to fiddle and modify to what you want.
Which brings me onto my next point, make your own presets, this great little feature will mean that once you've altered a preset to your setup and style save it, and load it when you need it. If you make a mistake then reset the presets.
Also this deivce comes with a tuner, though can be difficult to use and set up
I recommend taking time to learn all the tricks with this device

In conclusion:

Pros -
Great value for money
Wide range of effects
Good sturdy build
Nice addition with the expression pedal
Built to last

Cons -
The time consuming task of scrolling through every effect to find yours
The location of the input and output may get in the way for some users, would of been better on the side
Size of Display and written text font may not be sufficient for playing at a gig
