In the past I had some recordings to do with choirs, and it was always a problem to give good headphone feeds for the singers. So , it was important to find a headphone amp where it was possible to adjust the volumes from every headphone, to find a headphone amp with different feeds so that singers or other musicians could make a more private balance. The powerplay pro-8 has it all. And yes, last but not least, every channel has a direct in and that was for me the reason for buying this headphone amp. Now, nobody can make problems in the studio when it comes to more or less voicings, bass or drums in the mix. Every headphone can have their own mix. So,10 points for this powerplay pro-8, and the price is right. (also important) .

I recently acquired one of these for use in a small home studio and it's certainly made my life a lot easier.

For a start, the price is right. Another Behringer bargain!

As it stands, I have it connected to a pair of my soundcard's outputs, and it's used to provide headphone feeds to performers in the live room and also to the engineer when people are recording in the same room as the monitoring system. Installation is easy; balanced inputs go into one or both of the two main inputs, and then headphone feeds can either be taken from the back (for permanent links to multicores or patchbays) or from the front, which is ideal for headphones in the same room.

You should note that the manufacturers quoted minimum headphone impedance is 100 ohms, which is a bit of a drawback if you want to use some models of headphone. With the right headphones, however, it goes loud enough for even the deafest of guitarists with room to spare. The metering is perfectly adequate, allowing you to set up input level and then keep an eye on whether the output is clipping.

The individual volume controls are just the ticket to allow for those who like to be deafened while recording and those who prefer to preserve their hearing.

Most of the time I'm happy with using a single headphone mix for all the headphones, but this unit does provide some scope for expansion as there is a second main feed which can be switched into each headphone output individually. I can see a use for this at some point when two people are recording together and each wants more of him or herself.

Finally, if the worst comes to the worst there are direct ins for each channel so you could in theory have 8 different mixes going in, spare soundcard outputs withstanding!

Sensible IO and control design, very convenient to use and all-round recommended!
