A classic by now, the CMS Series CK 1 capsule from AKG was a best seller from the moment it was launched in 1969. Comprising a range of interchangeable capsules and preamps as well as then innovative, dedicated accessories, the CMS Series from AKG quickly became a legend. It was discontinued in 1993. *I only rate it 9 out of 10 because I'm sure there is a better mic out there- it'd cost thousands though.
I have bought this with the intention to record acoustic guitar. For this purpose it is brilliant- giving a true and absolute sound. Having worked with similar microphones before, including the Neumann KM185 and others around the £500 ($900), I can find very little difference in quality considering the massive price difference. You would have to spend close to £1000 or above to get a microphone that is noticeably better. It is really good for a microphone where price is a factor and delivers very-near top quality performance for acoustic guitar. Don't waste your money on a more expensive one unless you're a millionare. For it's second function, recording hi hats and other cymbals, it performed pretty well. I can't complain at all. It can get quite close to the cymbal without distorting as well. I can't see much call for a better microphone. My behringer xenyx 802 doesn't have the best pre-amps and it still sounds awesome. I couldn't be happier with this microphone. For every reason- price, quality of build, sound performance, versatility... it's awesome.
