Boasting performance comparable to much larger systems, but in a compact package, the bi-amplified 8040A is ideal for use in many situations where a wide frequency response is needed but space is limited. Uses include nearfield monitoring, project/home studios, workstations, broadcast and TV control rooms and mobile production vehicles. The ingenious, flow optimized, reflex port achieves clear deep…
Buying a pair of these has transformed my studio/mixing and production experience. My mixes transfer MUCH better across all types of playback - on car stereos, crap stereos, hi-fi, headphones etc... This is what I was after - transferability.
If I dip out 2 db at 500HZ on a kik drum, I can actually HEAR it taking place. Wicked.
Superb detail - more btm end than you would credit them with, given the size - excellent. Detailed imaging. Plenty of volume for a medium room/near/near to mid-field situation. I sit just over one metre away ish - plenty loud enough for me.
I have not tested out loads of monitors in this price bracket, but I think it probably comes down more to personal taste rather than actual quality?
I bought these after reading reviews, hearing them briefly at a studio of a producer friend, and using the big brothers of these at work in a commercial studio I worked in freelance.
'Do you like the "Genelec" sound?'
This is probably more the question than 'are they any good?'

Genelec introduces its smallest speaker system to date with the new 8020A (Height with Iso-Pod™ 242 mm, Width 151 mm and Depth 142 mm). The system has been designed for monitoring in difficult listening environments, particularly those compromised by lack of space. However, size is no handicap to performance as the 8020A two-way active monitoring system incorporates Genelec's acoustic…
I agree with the above review wholeheartedly; when I purchased these I was worried about the bass response..when I plugged them in and auditioned some material I was absolutely gobsmacked by the amount of low end these monitors put out! I simply couldn't believe speakers this size could produce such clear, round bass. The overall sound is exceptionally clear and full, with incredibly detailed treble..Although as they say with the Genelec sound, you either love it or hate it. I personally love it!
Straight away I found flaws in tracks I had mixed previously, and my mixes improved by leaps and bounds. There's plenty of volume on tap as well, I was honestly suprised. These 8020's have got to be the best investment I've made so far with regards to studio equipment, I don't forsee myself needing to upgrade unless I were to move into a much bigger room.. And if that were the case I think I'd go for one of the bigger speakers in the 8000 series!

These tiny monitors are truly quite amazing. I have tried several other popular monitors in the £300 - £400 price range and these are by far the best I've heard. Unless you work most of the time with huge sub bass sounds these are the most detailed and accurate near field monitors you can get for the money.
Build quality is outstanding, the cast aluminuim enclosure and metal grill covers ensure these will last for ever and no 'poking dammage' from inquisative small children or errant pets is possible.
If you only have a small room to work in or have to watch your volume levels then again the genelecs come into their own, even at very low level the sound is full and fantastically detailed with astonishingly sharp stereo imaging. I tried other monitors before these as i couldn't really believe that speakers this size could produce a bottom end to work with seriously - think again ! There's black magic going on here I swear, if you set these up as suggested by the Genelec in a close nearfield pattern the bass reponse is astonishing - more than adequate for mixing bass on most material.
If you're looking for an impressive, loud pair of monitors to double as hifi speakers and impress your mates then these are probably not for you but if you want a pair of nearfields that will let you hear exactly whats going on in your mix and give you the best chance to get it right then i don't think you can get any better than these for under £500 let alone under £400.
