Akai Professional LPK 25 by Mark Hill
10 out of 10 on the March 17, 2010
The Akai Professional LPK 25 is fantastic. It’s about the length of a twelve inch ruler and is great for quick midi programming. If you are tight for space and use a programme like Cubase on your desktop or laptop PC, the LPK 25 is ideal for adding drums, synth, piano, halion samples etc. As a mini midi keyboard it’s hard to fault. It does exactly what it’s supposed to do.
I have read that some people have latency problems (a time lag between hitting the keys and hearing the sound) with midi keyboards. This usually has nothing to do with the keyboard and certainly has nothing to do with the LPK 25. If you have a good sound card with decent ASIO software you’ll have no problems with latency; my desktops immediately ran perfectly with the LPK 25. However, there will be those with cheaper laptops (like me) who having plugged in the LPK will probably experience latency; in my case it was embarrassingly bad. Again this is not the fault of the LPK but the cheap sound card on the laptop. It was easily fixed by a great free download from www.asio4all.com (and I’m really grateful to those guys). I’m also grateful, as usual, to Dolphin for their incredibly fast delivery and great price.
I hope you have fun with the LPK 25, it’s a useful little keyboard.

Rokit 5 G2 Monitors by Stephen BRown

I recently purchased a pair of rokit 5 g2\'s for my home studio set-up, and I am very pleased with the results.
For £250 a pair these are brilliant value. They look and sound great and hav had an immediate impact on my mix down of tracks.
I previously used passive speakers ran through an amp with a tannoy sub, and the rokits have made the mid and top end crystal clear.
I would recommend these to anyone wanting to upgrade their project studio and wanting to take their mixes seriously.

Ashdown Tourbus 10 Practise Amp by Johnnyfrisco
9 out of 10 on the March 02, 2010
I needed a portable little bass amplifier and liking the look of this one plus its weight... a little under 10 pounds or 4.5kgs, I decided to take a chance on this amp. Basically it sounds fine and produces a good bass sound for practise or even home recording if you don't want to record direct. It's very well constructed with a closed back. Just a bass, treble and volume control with an input for mp3 player to play along with. Also a headphone input onboard. I use a Yamaha budget bass and it sounds fine especially on the neck pickup. Bass and treble controls work well. On the floor the amplifier is set up to angle back slightly which gives it a real good studio style look. The real surprise with this amp though came when I plugged in my Fender Strat... it produces a cracking sweet tone of real quality and coupled with a good digital delay it's just magic. I then tried my Les Paul and once more brilliant sounds and with an overdrive pedal Digitech Bad Monkey it sounds superb. Then I tried my Peavey set up for slide and once more terrific sounds! So unwittingly I have found a brilliant lead guitar amplifier that I love to play through... I shall be using it to record too it's that good a sound. This amp just simply produces a quality sound for bass and especially for lead guitar coupled with a delay and/or overdrive... is it a distant relative of the Fender Bassman!?

KRK RP 5 MkII by Damien
10 out of 10 on the March 02, 2010
This is my first set of monitors. I am used to mixing on a set of high end computer speakers, so this is obviously a step up. These speakers blow my previous set up right out of the water!
I have listened to my friends' Tannoy and Alesis monitors, which are good, but not as clear as the Rokits.
My favorite feature has to be the knobs on the back, which allow you to tweak the sound so it fits in your room. It's handy as we can't all afford acoustically treated, dedicated mixing rooms.
Overall, I think they are worth every penny.

My Second Pair - Great Value by James
10 out of 10 on the February 24, 2010
This is my second pair of BX5a's. I also have a pair of fantastic ESI nEar 8's and these compare well, albeit without the big bottom end and half the size. They are nice to look at, compact and very detailed. You lose the bass at about 50Hz but the mids and highs are clear and they are nice and loud. I bought these to replace the terrible Behringer monitors I bought (write that off to experience). I made the mistake of going for features (Optical in and two analogue inputs) over reputation Never again. The Behringers are gathering dust in the shed and the BX5a's are connected to my Mac and I'm really pleased with them. An absolute steal at under £200.

Project Studio Reflexion Shield by Dave Beeston
9 out of 10 on the February 23, 2010
I can't afford the Pro version so thought I'd give this a go. It's well made, comes with good, strong, mounting kit and it’s very light so your mic stand won’t fall over! Only minor criticisms are that the mic mount could be better as bottom entry mic leads foul slightly, also would have been good if the mounting rod slid into the body for transportation.
The difference it makes to vocals is unbelievable, so clear and dry, with a more punchier edge and without the sound reflections I normally get when recording at home. Vocals seem to sit better in the mix and give an overall nearer "Pro" sound - even with me singing!!
For better isolation, grab the quilt off the bed and hang over the back of a door - stick your mic with shield in front and sing away - the shield performs well on its own, but this seems to work better.
Overall, a top product that any home project studio would welcome
Dave

vox da5 by mr. jason ramsden
9 out of 10 on the February 22, 2010
i was looking for a compact well built amp, after reading a lot of reviews and peoples youtube comments, it was between a roland mini cube or the vox da5, i chose the da5, and im very very happy with the choice. lots of amp models and loads of quality effect options, this amp has literally got EVERYTHING you could possibly want, all the effects are high quality, and overall it produces a great full meaty sound. personally, after owning an orange 30watt combo, a marshall 100watt head and 4 x 12 cab, and also a laney linebacker 40watt combo, this beats them all on useability, its only 5 watts but it punches way above its weight, tho obviously it cant compete with the large wattage of the other amps, im happier with this. as a practise amp, its truly great. jason. :o)

Edirol R-09HR by caroline beaumont

Ordered it yesterday afternoon and it arrived this morning with free delivery. I spent weeks looking at reviews for various recorders on the internet and thought i'd add my own because i have found people's opinions so helpful when trying to choose.
I opted for the R-09HR because of the reviews and sound bytes i have seen and heard. I wanted a recorder for live gigs with my band and for practise. Many recorders make violin/fiddle sound harsh and i really wanted to see if i sound nice! People tell me i do, but after a zillion unflattering recordings i began to fear they were just being nice. My playing sounds fine to me, but recorded it's more lik scratchy nose flute.
I have only had the Edirol for a day and have tried it on 3 people singing and (vitally) me playing the violin. The violin track sounds rich and warm and quite unlike someone playing on an angry cat with an emery board as i feared it might!
I wish it came with a protective case as it has no way to attach a strap ( i have dropsy where delicate objects are concerned) and i wish that it had a tripod bush...and that the case and tripod accessories were not so prohibitively expensive.
However, i chose it for its' sound quality and am very happy indeed. It remains to be seen how it manages at live gigs..and how i manage to operate it...but so far, it seems a marvellous tool.

Edirol R-09HR by Margaret MacEachern
10 out of 10 on the February 18, 2010
I bought this recorder mainly to record birdsong to add to a DVD I am producing and because it is so early in the year there is very little birdsong yet. However, the quality of what I have recorded is excellent.
The recorder is very easy to set up and use and I do not see anything ugly about it (as suggested by other reviewers). It does an excellent job with the greatest of ease.
It is very sensitive which is a plus but in my case where I have been using it out in the open, I find it will require a windshield. But it picks up sounds from a great distance - today it picked up the call of a Raven flying high above me.
The rubberised surface makes it very easy to handle and there is less fear of you losing your grip on it especially if your hands are cold. This is an excellent feature as far as I am concerned.
The fact you can add a 4Gb SD card is also of great benefit.
The service from Dolphin Music was second to none with the fastest delivery ever to what, in my case is a very rural location.
The only minus as far as I can see is not with the machine itself but with the cost of the accessories. I think they are too expensive and will put some people off buying them.
That apart, an excellent machine and well worth the money and hours and hours of research I carried out before buying it.
