Cubase SE3 - Music Creation & Production System

Bringing to your desktop powerful tools for composing, recording, editing and mixing, Cubase SE3 is your entry-level ticket to the world of computer-assisted music production. The latest member to join the Cubase product family, Cubase SE3 shines with the same user interface and award-winning VST Audio Engine as Steinberg’s flagship Cubase SX3. And that means when it comes to audio quality and intuitive handling, Cubase SE3 rivals its bigger brothers. Any way you choose to use it - as a sequencer for your home recording studio or a multi-track recorder for the band rehearsal room - with Cubase SE3 you get the real deal at an unbeatable budget price.

  • Audio + MIDI Recording and Mixing
  • Virtual Instruments and Effects
  • Professional Technology (32-bit Audio Engine, 24-bit/96-kHz Recording)
  • Powerful Editors for MIDI and Audio Processing
  • Cross-platform (Mac OS X/PC)

All New in Version 3

Featuring a thoroughly revamped user interface, Cubase SE3 is powered by the latest VST 2.3 Audio Engine. What’s more, it ships with many new features, including extended hit-point recognition for synching loops up to the song speed and automatic latency compensation for plug-ins.

  • Enhanced User Interface (The Look & Feel of SX3) - Courtesy of its revamped user interface, Cubase SE3 now handles even easier and more conveniently. You can color-code tracks and mixer channels just like in the higher-end Cubase versions, which makes working with large projects much easier.
  • Enhanced Track Inspector - The improved Track Inspector not only affords you access to all track and channel parameters, it also lets you edit a virtual instrument’s MIDI and audio parameters in a single Inspector view.
  • VST 2.3 Audio Engine - Powered by the award-winning VST 2.3 Audio Engine, Cubase SE Version 3 now features the same audio technology as Cubase SX3 or Nuendo 3. This includes full, automatic latency compensation for plug-ins. Regardless of how many virtual effects or instruments you load, the timing remains precise sample for sample.
  • Workflow - Cubase SE3 now features detailed refinements in the Project window, and its tool bars and editors offer automatic chord recognition and key correction. The Info line lets you edit several events simultaneously. MIDI files are easily dragged and dropped into an existing or new project. With individually variable Pre-Roll and Post-Roll times, musicians will find it easier to punch in and out of recordings.
  • Working with Loops - Another key innovation in Cubase SE3 is its enhanced hit-point recognition capability. It now recognizes rhythmic audio material such as drum or percussion loops with greater speed and precision. Upon conversion, these loops may be synched up individually to the respective song speed. This facilitates your production efforts, particularly when working with loop libraries. To this end, Cubase SE3 supports all standards audio file formats.

Features

  • Basics - Hallmark features of Cubase SE3 include an intuitive interface and exceptional ease of use. With Cubase SE, you’ll find it very easy to stay on top of the action and quickly achieve the desired results.
  • Audio Recording and Editing - Endowed with professional audio features, Cubase SE3 is the perfect system for studio recording, live recording and creative audio processing.

Omigod!

I've been using an earlier version of Cubas(is) which I've been making use of for many years.
Now I buy this.
Simply, I feel it could be a wonderful system but it is utterly useless to me. (I have no hardware problems ar present.) It describes how you get started, record audio, record midi, use key editor, use score editor, but in most cases nothing relates to what you would expect, promised sounds don't materialise, scores can't be accessed, other tracks intrude themselves....

What is needed at this point is a manual or whatever which deals with these access problems.

But it is as if the Getting Started Book had the first five chapters removed. The Operation Manual doesn't have them either. They read well but they don't deliver.

No wonder they withdraw the product.

Having laboured with a 4 track cassette based machine for some time, I started to think about a digital multitracker or computer based set up. I play and record drums(machine), bass, guitar, keyboards and vocals, one track at a time and wanted digital quality and ease of use. Also, like most of us, I am limited for space to leave things hooked up, so needed something that was quick to set up.
I did the whole research thing, and figured that already having a decent computer, I'd go for Cubase SE3. Dolphin delivered the very next day.
Installation was no problem and the getting started manual is straight to the point, being written in a familiar tone by what appears to be a normal person not a computer specialist! (no offence intended).
The tutorials took me through the basic stuff and in no time I was laying down my first drum track on Cubase. Excellent, now for the bass.
Oops! Latency. My prior 'research' had highlighted the need for an ASIO compatible soundcard and i'd read a lot of stuff about latency, particulary on the Cubase users web forum. Yeah, I know, I only had myself to blame for not checking my existing soundcard, blah blah.
Next day saw the arrival of a M Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard from Dolphin and in it went. Ahh, no latency. On went the bass and guitar tracks in a flash.
Cubase SE3 is easy to use and logical in its screen layout. The mixer window mimics a 'proper' desk with sliders for track volume and controls for pan and eq etc. There's also an automation function which is great for volume fades. Adding effects and editing is no problem.
Audio quality is very good and the whole thing gives the impression of being well thought out. The midi side of things is good for the price, although that's not really my thing.
Beyond the getting started manual, there's an operations manual in pdf format which covers the more advanced features of Cubase, again well written.
All in all, Cubase SE3 is a good bit of software for a very good price. As yet i've not found anything I don't like and it does exactly what I wanted it to.
I hope this review is of help to someone.
