Dudes, This mic is amazing for vocal & guitar work. I\'ve had mine for over a year now working with various singers and can i just say that the only possible disapointment i have found with this mic is that it doesn\'t come with a elastic shockmount which is an extra £60 otherwise i have found no fault with mine since the day i bought it!!!! It just has such a clean warm sound going through the tube and I would recommend it to everybody if they are looking for a class valve mic and dont physically have masses of money to spend on one but still want to achieve the proffesional sound. Bless

RODE NTK Review

This valve mic is superb! I have had it for about 18 months and the clarity and depth of audio recoding is as good as it gets at this price level.

You get the mic and power-supply which are linked by a long cable with a multi pin end. The XLR connects to the power-supply and then to your equipment.

Most of my work is audio/speech and the rich warmth that this mic gives to the audio is very pleasing to the ear. It is just as good for vocal recording for songs.

In the early days I discovered that if you have a strong voice it is fairly easy to overload the NTK, so to make sure that I don't have extra complex editing I use a pop shield and have rigged a wire coathanger to set a minimum distance away from the mic to ensure it is not overloaded. It sounds heath robbinson, but it works! The NTK is so sensitive that if you are not careful you will end up with pops and clicks from your own mouth that you didn't realise you made - thus the contraption made from a coat hanger. It makes no difference to the end result which is still silky smooth and warm and, with the devise to set the minimum distance, it also helps with consistancy from one recording session to another - something that is very important!

I also advise the use of a good quality compressor to use with the NTK (I use a TLA Audio 5050) this makes sure that you keep the overall level more constant than might otherwise be the case.

So in summary, you need to be a little careful that you can reproduce a constant quaility session to session - which is all to do with mic placement and proximity of the 'voice', but appart from that I have no reservation in recomending this truly excellent mic - 10 out of 10!

  • HOW TO...RECORD VOCALS

With the use of a good preamp and the right software, it's possible to get incredible results when you record vocals at home. And even equipment such as the Line 6 Toneport (either the UX1 or UX2) commonly used for guitars, can be a great choice...read on.
