Click here to see how you could use the Tascam FW-1884 in your studio.

The versatile mix/ control surface features nine touch-sensitive, motorised, 100 mm faders - eight channel and one master fader - 11 dedicated (4-band parametric) EQ, Pan, Solo, Mute Select and Aux send rotary encoders, transport controls, a professional, weighted jog shuttle wheel and an array of assignable function / short-cut keys, for flexible control of the widest possible range of dedicated audio software programmes. A "FAT Channel" provides for adjustment and GUI representation of EQ, dynamics and effects parameters.

In addition, the FW-1884 provides full, stand-alone, digital audio mix capabilities, with high quality microphone pre-amps, 24/96 AD / DA conversion throughout and 96 kHz operation on all analogue I/O channels, a full compliment of eight analogue microphone/ line inputs - with phantom power and inserts on each input - 8-channel ADAT and stereo SPDIF digital I/Os. In use, the FW-1884 allows access to up to 18 audio inputs at one time.

Eight analogue outputs enable simultaneous monitoring of stereo and 5.1 multi-channel audio. A 4x4 MIDI interface/ patcher is also featured. Connection to host computer platforms is via either of two high-speed IEEE 1394 (FireWire) interface connections. Word Clock I/O ensures accurate synchronisation within the digital signal chain. An assignable footswitch jack facilitates such operations as hands-free "punch-in" recording or MIDI control.

The FW-1884 control surface is laid out in order to intuitively support an extensive range of audio production software. Software support is for Windows 2000™, Windows XP™, Mac OS-9™ and Mac OS-X™ with ASIO, WDM, MME and GSIF drivers, enabling control of major workstation packages such as Protools™, Logic™, Nuendo™/ Cubase™, Digital Performer™, Pyramix™, Soundscape™, Samplitude™, Sequoia™. The FW-1884 also features emulation of the control features of the Mackie Control to enable immediate use of the FW-1884 with software that supports the Mackie Control but does not yet support the FW-1884.

Further system expansion is possible with the FE-8 expansion module, providing eight additional, fully spec'd, channel strips; including motorised faders, dedicated and assignable encoders and keys.

Tascam FW 1804

This an excellent quality unit, judging from my first few weeks of use.
I had some problems getting outputs to work because I overlooked the Cubase LE setup instructions for the unit. This setup phase is a pitfall of this type of equipment because it has to be done and one can miss something important. The audio wasn\'t recognised properly and at first I thought I had bought a lemon.
Since getting it properly set up however, which didn\'t take long, I have found it eay to use for both audio and MIDI recording.
I like the way you can set it up to fire on all channels, 8 only or two in, two out, but even at the full setting there have been no software glitches since I set it up correctly.
Playback is smooth and 100% crackle-free on my iMac G4 slot-loader (silent - no fan!) souped up from G3 with a new motherboard which only runs at 550 MHz -- I was promised good performance with OSX 10 and so it has been. I chose the FW 1804 and LE because I have Firewire on the Mac and on a PC and it\'s so much faster than USB, also because of the high MIDI spec (2 in, 4 out) and the fact that LE system requirements were within my range. It\'s turned out exactly as I planned.
It seems a good choice, but note that so far I have not gone beyond three simultaneous tracks and light use of effects.
One slight drawback is that the phantom power is too weak for my Oktava 219 mic so I have had to retain my old DM2 pre-amp. As there is no problem with power generally, I attribute this to incompatibility not to a defect in the mic or the 1804, which are now producing great sound. Sound quality is noticeably better than with my old Atari-driven setup piped through a small Roland mixer, which wasn\'t bad at all. Display is clear and controls easy to use.
Another point to note is that the bundled Gigastudio software is PC only -- no problem as I am using two outboard synths (Roland 2080 and MT 32) and a Starr Labs controller, but it might affect others.
Thanks to its speed, Firewire is a tremendous basis for a system like this, and for anyone doing simple to moderately complex recording and needing more than the usual number of MIDI connections I believe this interface and software package is terrific value for the price. Atari and Roland have proved to be quality makers and I think Tascam/Frontier may deserve the same description, which I don\'t hand out lightly.

nice all round gizmo!

This is a nice piece of equipment for someone who wants an all in one package at a reasonable price! just be aware not to expect miracles out of the preamps coz they aint all that! however i have gotten decent drum recordings from it! it jus sounds a little harsh on vocals and more subtle instruments in my opinion, but there is the option to a combine with any other preamp over adat lightpipe so, not the end of the world!
Installation was reletively painless and it integrates well with my laptop over a single fw cable! all in all a nice piece of gear but it would be great if they would upgrade the preamps and charge extra.

  • Part 4: Interfaces and soundcards

You’ll need to get sounds into and out of your computer when producing music, so some kind of ‘interface’ should be on your shopping list. You might think that you already have the necessary connections, but many of today’s interfaces come with multiple inputs and outputs (for recording bands and outputting to multi-channel surround systems), bundled software, on board sounds and, in some cases, much more, so really are worthy and cost-effective additions to your computer music set-up. In this part of the Dolphin Computer Music guide we’ll discuss all of the interfacing options currently available…

  • What does the bit depth and sample rate refer to?

Most modern audio interfaces provide the facility to specify the bit depth and sample rate for a particualr project but what differences do these values actually make to the quality of the audio? To help you understand exactly what these measures of digital audio are refering to we have created this helpful guide.
