Sydec Audio Engineering has just brought MADI compatibility to Pro Tools® HD2® system users.

If you are a Pro Tools HD2 user, this means that you can now connect your Pro Tools system quickly and easily to a MADI compatible mixing desk, via the Soundscape iBox MADI2-HD2.

It also means that you can hook-up any standalone, MADI compatible multichannel I/O and format conversion unit to your Pro Tools system. Sydec Audio Engineering has an extensive range of such units:

Externally, the iBox MADI2-HD2 is an elegantly styled, 1U high, rackmountable unit. The front panel design is reminiscent of the rest of the iBox range… rather understated in this case: since the unit is controlled from the computer, the only front panel controls are the power switch and a clock sync lock indicator LED.

The business end of the unit is the rear panel, which features, from left to right:

• Two HD2 primary ports for connection to your Pro Tools HD2 card.
• Two MADI I/O port
• One USB port for remote control of the unit from the computer.
• One Word/SuperClock input port.
• An IEC connector for the self-switching, internal power supply.
  

The rear panel legending is repeated "in reverse" (upside down) on the rear panel and on top of the unit so that it can be read easily from whatever position. A basic set of instructions regarding Sample Rates and MADI to HD2/HD2 to MADI routing is also printed on the top panel.

Each Primary Port provides 32 I/O channels to/from a Digidesign ProTools|HD® card (so that a single iBox MADI2-HD2 can provide I/O for two ProTools|HD® cards).

Each MADI port provides:

• 56 or 64 MADI digital inputs and outputs at up to 48kHz.
• 28 or 32 MADI digital inputs and outputs at up to 96kHz.
• 14 or 16 MADI digital inputs and outputs at up to 192kHz.
  

The input and output channels can all be used simultaneously in any configuration. For instance, when combining the iBox MADI2-HD2 with the iBox 64-MADI-SA converter unit, it is possible to route the analog and AES/EBU inputs to the MADI outputs, and at the same time the MADI inputs to the analog and AES/EBU outputs.
