None more divisive, the chorus pedals has as many detractors as devotees. But it wasn't until I started playing around with mine that I realised how many of my favourite records put this sound to great effect. The real selling point of the CE-5 is the scope of crystal clean chorus sounds on tap. The tiered tone control provides access to everything from bright, piercing twinkle to low, dull sheen. With the other controls mastered you quickly realise that it's not all '80s slick as snot pop, with low string riffage recalling The Cure, arpeggios screaming The Smiths, and wobbly distortion insisting you try out those Nirvana solos. In keeping with other Boss products, it is super clean, so look elswhere for analogue idiosyncracy. Never-the-less, it's telling that before getting the CE-5 I hadn't wanted chorus pedal, and now I wouldn't know what to do without one.
