A couple of years before Variax® was born, we decided to turn our attention from all that guitar gear to the guitar itself. We wondered—could it be possible to capture a complete range of this tone in one single instrument? It was a daunting task, but then so was the idea of squeezing a whole collection of amps and effects into one little kidney bean shaped metal box. So we figured, why not give it a go?

We knew our sounds would have to be amazingly accurate to meet the needs of discriminating guitarists, so we began an intensive research project into guitar physics. We assembled test guitars that would make Victor Frankenstein blush. We systematically examined every factor that contributes to a guitar's tone, and developed ways to measure the complex interactions of vibrating strings, resonant bodies, and magnetic pickups. More importantly, we developed ways to capture these interactions mathematically so we could get the same sounds from our guitar.

As we refined our measuring and modeling techniques, we began working on a new, powerful hardware platform that could deliver our shockingly accurate sounds. Variax needed to have less noise than a standard humbucker, the ability to switch sounds in the fraction of a second that it takes to slap a pickup selector switch to the next position, and be powered in a variety of ways. And, most importantly, perform so flawlessly that you could forget it's even there.

As the body and brain neared completion, it was time for us to create the soul. We auditioned an amazing array of vintage instruments to find the ones with the most distinctive voices and personalities. We applied our painstaking measuring techniques to these specimens, and refined our models while constantly referring back to the originals for accuracy. When the model reached the point not only sounding like the original, but also being as much fun to play, it was done.

The result of our labors? Variax. An entire guitar collection in a single instrument.

Better than expected

I got my Variax 600 from Dolphin as an ex-demo. This saved me only 10 quid on the price, but I figured that it would come perfectly set up. I was a bit disappointed to discover that in fact it was missing the truss-rod and bridge adjuster keys, and that a battery had burst in the battery compartment, leaving it cooroded and full of gunk. After cleaning it up, I still can't get it to run on battery power, but it works fine using the power supply. Having dealt with Dolphin a number of times over the last year, I'm sure that there'll sort the problem for me!

The first thing I realised about the 600 is that it looks much better in real life than in the photos. Line 6 don't do themselves any favours with the flatly-lit front-view only pictures on their site, and these seem to be the only pictures abailable on the net.

Mine is in "vintage white" which my wife insists is actually pale primrose - and I've got to admit that she's probably right.

The build quality is good, much better than I'd been led to expect from other reviews on the web, and, except in one respect, it's easily up to Strat quality. I don't much like the frets which are narrow and quite high, but that's probably a matter of personal taste. However, the whole thing is let down somewhat by the finish to the fret ends. After two hours of playing, my fingertips were pretty shredded.

If the fretboard was rosewood, I'd probably take a stone to the frets and just smooth them off a bit, but as it's maple, and lacquered, I'm just a wee bit nervous of doing that!

It's still a pleasure to play, and the sounds of course, are incredible. I've been using it through a Roland Cube, mostly on the Black Panle and Brit Pop settings. The acoustic guitar emulatations don't sound very good, even on the clean channel, but as the included foot pedal allows you to switch to an XLR feed to the PA, that's not a problem - shame they don't included an XLR cable as standard.

I'd heard that the "stereo" jack lead that connects the guitar to the foot pedal, and also supplies it with power, was not very good quality and planned to replace it with a Planet Waves lead, but that is what was supplied (not sure if this is now standard or becuase Dolphin had lost the original).

I'm still playing with all the various sounds (can't wait to here it through a Flextone, which is currently on order from Dolphin). Currently, for general use, I have to say that the Tele, Strat, and 335 sounds seem the most useful, but I'm really hoping that the band introduce some songs where I can use the 360-12!

All in all, I can't think of any other instrument for under 700 quid that could have fulfilled my requirements better than this - and it cost under 450.

  • HOW TO...RECORD ELECTRIC GUITARS (THE EASY WAY!)

The search for the perfect electric guitar sound never ends for most musicians. Unlike the piano and drums that can generate sound naturally, a guitar player is blessed AND cursed that electricity is the main ingredient to achieving any tone at all.

  • HOW TO...RECORD ACOUSTIC GUITARS

With the advent of computer-based recording, studio-quality sound and 24 track recordings are now a reality for anyone with a computer. While software samplers have made it easy to get real sounding piano, string, drum, and synth sounds, the unpredictable voodoo of recording juicy guitar tone was still unattainable without great pains. In 1998, Line 6 released a kidney bean shaped desktop device that changed the world for recording guitarists: POD®.
