SG Style

In 1960, Gibson Les Paul sales were significantly lower than they had been in previous years, so in 1961 the model was given a completely new body style that was thinner and had 2 sharp cutaway horns that made the upper frets more accessible. And thus the SG was born.

Gibson eventually removed the "Les Paul" name off it, and today the SG is a classic guitar on its own merit, having inspired many lookalike models. The SG found a niche amongst Heavy rock guitarists, thanks to the popularity of bands such as AC/DC and Black Sabbath, whose guitarists (Angus Young and Tony Iommi, respectively) made the SG their trademark guitars.

That's not to say the SG can appeal only to hard-rock players! George Harrison played an SG in 1964/65 during the recordings of "Revolver", and Eric Clapton used one when he used to be in Cream. The SG is a great guitar than can fit any style, perfect for those who want the power of a humbucking-equipped Les Paul but also want a lighter instrument like the Stratocasters.
