Synthesizers
A synthesizer is an electronic musical instrument that generates sounds unobtainable from ordinary musical instruments. It can be manipulated in variety of ways. It is distinguished from an electronic piano or electronic organ by the fact that its sounds can be programmed by the user, and from a sampler by the fact that the sampler allows the user to make digital recordings of external sound sources. A Sampler is an instrument that records and plays back samples, usually by allowing them to be distributed across a keyboard and played back at various pitches.
Computers and software can today match nearly any type of hardware you care to mention. That means you can emulate the precision that once, only top music producers were able to get.
With the creation of soft synths and samplers you can have a complete music production studio coming from just one computer, and not have to shell out thousands of pounds for the hardware and a rack to mount them all on.
Many big manufacturers have created their own synths and samplers to accompany their Major Sequencing product. These plug-in type pieces of software are usually very good as they are made specifically for the sequencing package. Companies such as Emagic and Steinberg are at the forefront of this industry.
