Sequencers

Sequencers are at the heart of any music production system. The sequencer offers tracks onto which sound signals can be recorded or multiple parts and events arranged. Sequencers offer differing features but largely within two main technolgy spheres: MIDI and Audio. Audio represents the ability to record, edit and arrange with digital audio - you could, for example, record a microphone signal into your sequencer and then edit that recording and arrange it into a part for your song. MIDI is the use of musical data 'maps' to record parts and/or control sound modules - a MIDI keyboard could, for instance, be used to 'trigger' notes of sound generated by a MIDI sound module or software instrument. Those MIDI notes could be recorded, edtied or arranges as with audio parts. Software instruments and effects processors [for altering your sounds] and integration with hardware devices are all extra feature offered in most sequencers. Sequencing software is essential for composing and will also allow you to record audio signals. Most sequencing software requires the use of a 'soundcard' or audio capture unit to function properly. In an educational context a typical sequencer application might be used for recording purposes, composing and even for teaching music theory since demonstrating musical concepts by using the simple visual aids featured in sequencing technology can be very effective.
