Modulation
Modulation effects are usually one of three kinds: Phaser, Flanger or Chorus.
Phasing is a popular effect for electric guitar. The term was often used[citation needed] to refer the original tape flanging effect heard on many psychedelic records of the late 1960s, notably "Itchycoo Park" by the Small Faces, and "Pictures of Matchstick Men" by Status Quo. Eddie Van Halen often used a phaser as part of his signal chain.
Flanger is a type of phasing, but Flangers tend to sound more natural, like the "jet plane whoosh" effect, whereas phasers tend to sound more otherworldy.
Chorus can make a single instrument sound like there are actually several instruments being played. It adds some thickness to the sound, and is often described as 'lush' or 'rich'. A good example is the guitar riff of "Come As You Are" by Nirvana, which helped to popularize the Electro-Harmonix Small Clone chorus pedal.
