KS4
At KS4 students may be studying for GCSE music or vocational programmes that include the use of music technology. You might also be interested in project or pastoral provision with a musical element or emphasis. Naturally, depending on your specific area of need or interest you will want different equipment. If you are unsure about anything you should contact our education experts here at Dolphin for advice. Below, however, are some suggestions for things you might bear in mind:
For GCSE and vocational course compositional elements you will need a sequencing application and a range of sounds that your students can use to work with. Going for an all-in-one system with sequencing tools and software instruments is generally the simplest option since it keeps what the students have to learn to a minimum so that they can concentrate only what they need to do. Some suggestions for popular sequencing options are included in this category.
A soundcard is essential for the sequencing application to work properly and, since there are recording elements to the programmes of study for KS4, you should consider a soundcard that offers microphone and instrument connectivity. It is advisable to check with our experts and with your ICT technicians about what soundcards would best suit any existing computer hardware you might have - of course, if you are buying new computer hardware from Dolphin Music then the systems will be built and tested by our installation engineers.
For a more advanced set up you might want to offer a studio style facility with mixing desk and multi-track capability. Vocational Music Technology courses or those with elements of recording and production will require this sort of equipment.
Any music technology systems you might offer at this level of study will almost certainly have features for broader use such as project work or for pastoral clubs that can be used to engage students of all kinds. The equipment can also be used for younger students and those of lower ability levels. Staff can also use the technology for recording and cataloguing students' performance work which will mean among other advantages much less time wasted looking for students work to mark.
