Sennheiser E 906 Dynamic Microphone For Guitar Reviews
I needed to mic up my guitar amplifier, both for live sound and for recording purposes. I did some research and in the end it was between this and an SM57.
Im glad I picked the e906!
It gives a very natural sound, a very close representation of what is actually coming out of the amplifier, lacking (in a good way) the mid peak that you get with an SM57. It also retains the warmth of sound that a good valve amp produces.
It is very easy to position, much less picky about placement than the SM57, but at the same time it is very easy to tweak your sound by moving the mic.
It has a higher sensitivity than most mics of this type which means that you don\'t need your gain as high and you get a quieter recording.
The mic is also very good at coping with the high SPL that a guitar amp can put out, and it does not distort at all at any volume that I\'ve used it at.
The 3 position switch is great too. Selecting the brighter setting gives you a sound with more upper \'fizz\', quite like the e609 that lots of people use for guitar amp micing. This would be a good position if you need to cut through in a live mix, or if you are using this as a second mic when micing in stereo.
The middle position sounds exactly like what is coming out of the amp. The last, \'warm\', position on the switch rolls off a fair bit of treble. If you play jazz guitar this could be just the setting you are looking for.
The mic is extremely sturdy and well built.
My only complaint is that the mic grip that comes with it fits a little on the tight side, but that is only a minor problem on what is otherwise a really excellent mic.
The Sennheiser E906 Beautiful rich clear reproduction. It\'s ideal for miking guitar amps whether live or studio. Feels delicate to hold so careful when gigging! It has three tone settings, the middle one - in my opinion - giving a slightly warmer sound than the SM57. Handles high volume brilliantly. Highly recommended
The Sennheiser E906 is an attractive mic for the electric guitarist who wants to mic a cabnet without a mic stand. I had considered an E609, but was intrigued by the multiple filters offered in the E906, and so I made the decision to put aside my trusted Shure 57 (and ditch the extra mic stand with it) and take the new mic on the next gig. It certainly did a great job in a live application. But when I took the next step and attempted some recording with it, that is when the filter difference really enhanced the tone variance I was looking for in recording different amps\guitars.
Heartily recommend the mic!
