Line 6 Amplifi Buyers Guide
Line 6 Amplifi Buyers Guide
Every gigging guitarist has had that awkward moment where they've sought to justify a bedroom or garage full of gear. Whether it was your other half, parents or a disbelieving lead singer, you knew deep down that yes you really did need a 5 watt practice amp, half stack and amp sim for recording, never mind the dozen pedals.
Well, I've got good news and bad news because that excuse has fallen down thanks to Line 6. The good news is that it's because the Amplifi amps do all these jobs impeccably, no need for rakes of gear just an Amplifi and your iOS device. Let me run you through how you can free up space at home and make gigging a whole lot easier.
Practice & Play Along
Amplifi 75 At Home
One of the most notable things about the Amplifi is it's ingenious 5 speaker design, allowing full range stereo playback from any Bluetooth device. Four of those drivers have independent volume control and a crisp, full sound that's well suited to music playback. The guitar speaker is no slouch either, designed by the legendary tone fiends at Celestion, it's got plenty of gnarly sounds while remaining neutral enough to adapt to the full range of sounds the Amplifi can pump out.
The amp easily passes one of the most important tests of any amp intended for home use, it looks good enough to take pride of place anywhere from the bedroom to the kitchen (play a little music while cooking maybe?). It looks great on stage too of course, so that's kudos from fellow gear heads at the gig too.
Get The Sound In Your Head Or A Tone From Your Record Collection
Want to go digging yourself? No problem as the Amplifi has all the depth you would expect from a Line 6 product. This is the company that gave the world the DL4 and Spider amps after all, there's a simply staggering number of pedal, amp and studio gear emulations in there.
Not much of a knob twiddler? That's cool as the Amplifi app gives you access to tones from everyone else. All rated and selectable by various criteria, an incredible range of sounds are available. Get country picking cleans from a Nashville vet or the latest shred tones from a Latvian metal band.
As if wireless streaming and independent plaback wasn't clever enough Line 6 have also developed a mind bending new tone matching technology. Simply select a tune on your iOS device and the Line 6 Tone Finder Fairies listen, figure out how the tone was achieved and give you the settings to match it on your amp! Ok, that might not be 100% technically accurate but the fact remains one minute I was pressing tone match for 'Bridge Of Sighs' by Robin Trower and the next I was jamming out bluesy, phaser licks like there was no tomorrow.
Gigging Without Grief
Finally, you've had hours of fun practicing to your favourite tunes, jamming with band mates and getting a bank of tones you love. Now it's time to take it to the stage. This section is a lot simpler, both Amplifis are loud enough for gigging at 75 and 150 watts. We'd recommend the 150 for any mid sized or larger venues, the 75 will suit any solo performers nicely though and still has enough power for small venues in a band.
You can even ditch the pedal board by grabbing the Line 6 FBVMkII foot controller and getting stomp box control over all your carefully crafted sounds for the Amplifi.
