Recording & Production With Ableton Live 9 & Push

Ableton Live 9 Push Update

Ableton At Dolphin
Daft Punk Ableton

A superb guide from Sonic Academy, covering how to get a Nu-Disco sound in Ableton Live.
Abelton Live 9 Packs

If all the goodies included in Ableton aren't enough for you or you need something more specific then not to worry. Ableton Packs allow you to add the world's first analogue synth, realistic drum kits, brass or even a 150+ year old Lithograph to your collection.

Hook up your Push and Ableton to the new breed of MIDI hardware like the Minitaur, Microbrute and Novation Bass Station II. Modern work flow and classic sounds.

Using Ableton Push With Hardware

Hardware is making a comeback and the hybrid hardware/software studio is becoming increasingly common. The Push is ideal as a hub for controlling all your hardware via MIDI with Ableton's new Max for Live MIDI effect for complete CC control. Find out why Dauwd finds it inspirational to combine the intuitive Push interface with analogue hardware.

As you can see from the Daft Punk cover you might use Live to create some nu-disco beats, bass, guitar and strings. The included range of instruments, inspiring session view, flawless timestretching, intuitive MIDI editing makes putting a track together a breeze. While capturing inspiration with a straightforward interface remains at the core of the Ableton Live experience it's capable of so much more. With the Suite version you have enough instruments to score a film and an entire deep modular audio environment in Max For Live. Throw in the tactile Ableton Push controller and you've turned all that into a true computer instrument. Compose, create and arrange at home then take it all on to the stage without compromise while retaining complete control.

The Push controller is something easier demonstrated by seeing and hearing than trying to describe it.

Ableton Push As Step Sequencer

It's pretty clear that the Push is a lot of fun to play and easy to get to grips with. If you fancy something a little more classic Ableton have introduced a Step Sequencer in Ableton Live version 9.1. One of the big advantages of Ableton developing hardware exclusively for Live is updates and upgrades can be made much more frequently.

So that's Ableton Live 9 working as traditional music production software, recording software and beat making. What about using Live, well, live? Best talk to some of the pros about that.

Gotye Using Ableton Live 9 On Stage

Having already used Abelton Live to produce the album Making Mirrors and hit single Somebody That I Used To Know it was a logical step for Walter De Backer AKA Gotye to use Live on the stage. Triggering samples and arrangements within Live using an Akai MPK, Roland SPD-SX, Clavia Nord Stage 2 and Novation Launchpad. There's very little file management involved, import samples from your recorded session into a single song session and play away.

If you want to find out more about the Novation Launchpad check out our article. These guys really push it to the limit.

Not in a band? Find out how solo electronic artist Four Tet uses the Launchpad and Live in his setup.

Experimental Music Production With Ableton Live Suite

Live is reliable and intuitive enough to be used stripped back and simply as one instrument in a larger set up but it's also a big favourite with artists at the other end of the spectrum. Electronic experimentalists like Flying Lotus, Robert Lippok and Four Tet have all used Live for years now. The introduction for Max For Live turned Ableton into the deepest, most far out DAW around. Effectively a tool kit to create any instrument, effect or MIDI device your heart desires.

There's simply too much to cover easily with Max so here's Robert Lippok show how he uses it to get end result, a great piece of music.

Ableton Push Review

Push has won over musicians and music press alike with Sound On Sound being very impressed in their review of Live 9 & Push.

Ableton Live Push Review

"Live 9 is yet another evolutionary step forward in the development of Ableton's flagship clip-based DAW."
