Presonus On Tour & In The Studio

Alt-J StudioLive Console

We've already covered the gear they use onstage but what do Alt-J rely on to get great sound and the perfect in-ear monitor mix. Well their engineer Lance Reynolds reveals that it's the Presonus StudioLive 24.4.2 digital console that they've been using on their recent US tour. Playing in clubs and mid-sized venues can mean the room and tech spec change from gig to gig. The StudioLive console takes away the pain of setup by offering snapshot recall for the monitor mixes. While it was mainly used for monitoring Lance did use it on FOH duties from time to time.

"I did get to use the StudioLive at FOH on a few occasions," Reynolds reports, "and Capture enabled me to record a soundcheck and immediately play the mix for the band. Plus, I was able to solo, mute, and change individual levels. Very cool. We also brought in the StudioLive to do a live gig at a radio station in a very small room, and I was able to multitrack, give everyone their monitor mixes, and mix the show for the live audience."

For the rest of this month Presonus are also offering a PRM1 reference mic free when you buy a StudioLive 24.4.2 console. So that's onboard effects, flexible routing, Firewire audio interface, great sound and a room tuning system all in one package. If you're looking for a workhorse that can cover monitors, FOH mix and is at home in the studio as well then the StudioLive consoles are a complete package.

Presonus aren't just a favourite on stage, they have some massive fans in the studio too. Teddy Riley worked with Michael Jackson, producing half of his Dangerous album and is currently working on MJ projects due for future release. Using previously recorded sessions, Terry is working on fresh new sounds and often simply vibing around the original vocal take. How does he get his ideas down while inspiration is fresh, by using the streamlined workflow of Presonus Studio One of course. Terry also packs a Presonus Faderport and Presonus audio interface.

Speaking of legendary performers, the Reverend Al Green also has a StudioLive console providing stellar sound live. Presonus spoke to his FOH engineer Al Davis to see how the StudioLive is working for him.
