My Bloody Valentine To Curate ATP UK - Sonic Youth, De La Soul & MBV Already Confirmed
My Bloody Valentine, the so-called shoegazing band who put out the acclaimed ‘Loveless’ album in 1991, have just announced that they’ll be curating the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival at the end of this year.
The band, centred around guitarist Kevin Shields, have already recruited indie stalwarts Sonic Youth and daisy age hip-hoppers De La Soul for the event – and the recently reunited My Bloody Valentine (MBV) will play a set themselves too. The Horrors and the Sun Ra Arkestra are also already confirmed.
ATP is subtitled The Nightmare Before Christmas, and takes place at Butlin’s in Minehead, Somerset on December 4th – 6th.
MBV formed in Dublin in the mid-80s, and their use of distortion and digital reverb on their guitars immediately marked them out. After early releases on Lazy Records, the band signed to Alan McGee’s Creation Records in 1988 and soon put out the ‘You Made Me Realise‘ EP.
With the release of debut album ‘Isn’t Anything’ they were heralded as being at the forefront of the ’shoegazing’ movement of indie guitar bands. Ride, Chapterhouse, Slowdive and their ilk all followed in their slipstream.
The ‘Loveless’ album, featuring tracks like ‘I Only Said‘ and with almost all instruments played by Kevin Shields, was universally acclaimed on release. It was their last record for Creation though, as it cost an alleged £250,000 to make and nearly bankrupted Creation Records. McGee reportedly couldn’t bear to work with Shields again.
MBV signed to Island Records, but Shields isolated himself and went a bit “crazy”. No further MBV material was released and the band disintegrated.
Until 2007, that is, when they regrouped for some low-key London gigs before hitting the festival circuit last year. Last autumn they curated the US version of ATP, and booked bands like Mogwai, Yo La Tengo, Dinosaur Jr and Mercury Rev for the New York event.
Shields is said to have revisited some 90s recordings with a view to releasing a new album sometime – but who knows when any finalised recorded material will emerge?
My Bloody Valentine is a shoegaze band formed in 1984 in Dublin, Ireland. The band’s best known lineup is Kevin Shields (vocals, guitar), Bilinda Butcher (vocals, guitar), Debbie Googe (bass) and Colm O’Ciosoig (drums). Shields and O’Ciosoig are the only original members of the band still in the group. In 1991, the band released their second full length album “Loveless”, later declared one of the finest albums of the 1990s. The band struggled to record a follow up album and split in 1997. The band reunited in 2007 and performed several concerts the following year. more
