Customer Spotlight: Janey Summer, D.I.Y. Solo Artist
Welcome to what we hope will become a regular and popular feature on our site! Each week, we'll give space to a musician/ producer who's a Dolphin customer and we'll find out how the gear they've bought from us has helped them out!
According to her website (www.janeysummer.com) Janey Summer, from the South West of England, is a mould-breaking rock singer, with an eclectic list of influences including Chris Cornell, Metallica, Massive Attack and Free, amongst others.
She continually impresses audiences with her unique and powerful vocals. Her album, “Along the Way” was released in August 2008. It’s hailed as a powerful, yet melodic collection of rock, defined by from-the heart lyrics, showcasing Janey’s singing and song-writing abilities, and is in high demand from fans.
Here's some of the gear Janey uses:
- Shure SM 58 Vocal Microphone
- Alesis Guitar FX and Acoustic FX pedals
- Tube Ultragain MIC200
- Alesis Midiverb4 digital effects processor
Janey explains how this gear helped to shape her sound:
"Honestly I can say it meant I could take a big step forward in my recording and live work in a way I wasn't able to before... I found I was becoming associated with the acoustic singer-songwriter genre, which was definitely not 'me'. I wanted to develop, both live and recording, in the direction of my passion, which is heavy melodic rock. So I invested in the above equipment to upgrade my 'home' studio - it meant I could develop my songs much more than I had ever been able to before. I taught myself to use Cubase (goodbye Tascam!) and recorded some basic drum/bass guitar tracks as a backing for gigs, which, along with the using the Alesis FX with my Dean electric acoustic guitar, meant my live set had 'come to life' so much compared to playing acoustically. It was basic, and in some ways a bit naff (!), but what a difference it made to me - I could finally start to see the potential for my music moving in the direction I wanted, namley totally rocking out!
"I recorded and mixed a few arrangements and release a white label EP in late 2006, which was well received. By that time I was also fronting a classic rock tribute band, making good use of my Midiverb4 and my trusty SM58 - oh man, that mic has taken some abuse in pubs around here!
With my confidence growing I decided to take the HUGE step last year of abandoning the 'home' studio in favour of getting a commercially recorded solo album, which I released this year - Along The Way - its had some awesome reviews. And my live set is about to develop further as I am currently recruiting band members for an early 2009 tour to promote my album, which I am very excited about - so no more DIY for a while!"
Good luck, Janey!
