Songs For The End Of The World
So...we're still here! It's a relief that those crazy scientists at the helms of the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) in Switzerland didn't suck us all into a black hole last Wednesday!
But since "End Of The World" rumours have been all the rage since...well, always, here's a selection of the best apocalyptic soundtrack to see us off in style, when the time comes...
R.E.M. "It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)"
One of their finest moments, indeed. For R.E.M and the teenage boy in the video, the end of the world is the moment of ultimate freedom, and joy...nothing to be scared of!
Metallica "Four Horsemen"
At their best, like in this classic song, Metallica sound like the Big Bang...this song is loud, fast, mean and could probably scare the hell out of the Four Horsemen, come to think of it. Metallica would eat them for breakfast!
The Cure "The End Of The World"
Doom and gloom have always been one of The Cure's favourite subjects...so this quite enjoyable pop tune doesn't sound as dramatic as the title suggests. Robert Smith probably thinks it's the end of the world every other day...it's no big deal! Cool song, mind...
U2 "Until The End Of The World"
One of U2's best moments, back when they were truly visionaires and this is one of Bono's best lyrics. Whether it's about Judas and Jesus or about any relationship that goes wrong, for U2 love & betrayal represent the true end of the world for those involved...
Muse "Apocalypse, Please"
Nevermind if the end of the world is out of our hands and there's nothing we could do about it. Muse, for one, actually ask for it! For the band who wrote "Supermassive Black Hole", nothing would be better than the end of the world! They'd play their biggest, most apocalyptic gig ever. Glastonbury? Bah, that's nothing! Matt Bellamy probably looks forward to the day when he'll play the loudest, most epic guitar solo ever, while we're all sucked into a black hole.
Rolling Stones "Gimme Shelter"
Without a shadow of a doubt, one the greatest moments of their long career. "Gimme Shelter" is a song full of danger and menace, with the ominous feeling of something really bad about to happen. It did...no wonder the song became the title of their infamous documentary depicting the tragic events at Altamont, 1969. For the Rolling Stones, the end of the world won't come with a bang...it'll happen little by little every day...
The Doors "The End"
This is the perfect song for the end of the world. This is it. This is the end, my friend. Sit back and relax. "Hey, mister lightman, turn down the lights..."
