Elbow Wins Mercury Prize Award

Published: Wed September 10, 2008  News Feed

Cult Manchester band Elbow were the surprise winners of this year's coveted Mercury Prize Award...

D’Addario endorsees Elbow were last night (September 9) announced as winners of the Mercury Music Award 2008 for their album The Seldom Seen Kid.

The group, who endorse D’Addario Strings, Planet Waves Accessories and Evans Drum Heads, beat off competition from Radiohead, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss and British Sea Power, as well as from dubstep artist Burial and fellow D’Addario endorsees The Last Shadow Puppets.

“This is quite literally the best thing that's ever happened to us," gushed singer Guy Garvey as he accepted a cheque for £20,000 in front of an audience of industry movers and shakers in London.

Many will see Elbow as deserved winners, having come full circle since their debut album was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize back in 2001.

The group seemed genuinely overawed at their accolade.

Speaking from the podium, singer Guy Garvey said: "Thank you very much. I'd like to thank all the players we've been with since day one, including Phil Chadwick, our manager.

"This is the best thing that's ever happened to us. We'd like to dedicate this award to Brian Glancy, one of the greatest men who ever lived. Thank you very much and have a top evening!"

Previous Mercury Award winners include Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, Portishead, Pulp and Primal Scream.
