D’Addario is pleased to announce the addition of Rodrigo Y Gabriela to its exclusive roster of artists. With their provocative flamenco-style reinterpretations of classic heavy metals songs, Rodrigo Y Gabriela’s unique sound straddles the worlds of rock, classical and world music.
Their self-titled album has received raves across the globe from music fans and critics alike, including Allmusic.com, which wrote, “This music is the sound of passion as interpreted by and spoken for in a new rock and roll language.”
Rodrigo (Sanchez) and Gabriela (Quintero) are two fast-fingered, Dublin-based, Mexicans with a unique sound and a lifelong passion for metal music. Rodrigo is a deft finger-picker who can move from raging speed to sensual soul in the space of a fret, while Gabriela employs fast, rhythmic techniques inevitably raising comparisons with Flamenco—which they acknowledge as an influence but swerve as a pigeonhole. The duo's repertoire flies beyond familiar Latin folk guitarists' styles because of the metal connection: their reworkings of Led Zeppelin's “Stairway to Heaven” and Metallica’s “Orion” are musts, and the presence, on “Ixtapa,” of the fiery Hungarian gypsy violinist, Roby Lakatos, is inspirational.
