Yes, the stylophone is back, and here's our Top 5 cool, classic songs that have used this instrument...and no Rolf Harris in sight! So get inspired and get yourself one as well!

1) "Space Oddity", David Bowie

Though "Space Oddity", David Bowie's first hit, only features one note and a glissando from the stylophone, it was enough to put this fantastic little machine on the minds of many music-loving fans...in many cases, the stylophone is used this way: not as a lead instrument, but just to add a little, subtle flavour to a recording.

2) Kraftwerk, "Pocket Calculator"

Here, in Kraftwerk's timeless classic, the use of the stylophone is more evident, as it's one of the main instruments on this track. and at least one of the band's members can be seen onstage playing one. A "stylophone solo" ends the song!

3) The White Stripes, "Icky Thump"

The Detroit's duo comeback single, first from their latest album "Icky Thump", surprised many fans of the band, for featuring a highly dissonant and downright insane stylophone solo! Jack White is also credited  as playing stylophone in the new Raconteurs album, "Consolers Of The Lonely"

4) Manic Street Preachers "So Why So Sad"

The Welsh rockers first single off their acclaimed "Know Your Enemy" album (2001) not only featured a great debt to The Beach Boys but, even more surprisingly, also featured a stylophone solo! Cool stuff...

5) Pulp, "Pink Glove"

Jarvis Cocker's saucy former band, and Sheffield's finest - Pulp - were advocates of the stylophone since their early days, before they became a chart-topping act. They used the stylophone in several of their songs in brilliant albums such as "His'N'Hers" and "A Different Class", and even named an early song, "Styloroc (Nites Of Suburbia)", after the musical instrument.

As you can see, this little - and cheap - musical instrument is very versatile indeed, besides being great fun to play with! From children to professional musicians, anyone can enjoy the stylophone! If you got inspired, you can also play it online here.
