Thursday 1st May 2008 - The shocking news that Sound Control, Britain's largest musical instrument retailer, have gone into administration has been all over the media today, and here's a round up of what's been said.
The Telegraph has published an article today, saying that competition from the internet was to blame for the unfortunate turn of events for Sound Control . The company, which operates twenty-six stores in the UK under the brand names Sound Control, Media Tools, Turnkey and Soho Sound House, has an annual turnover of £50million and employees a total of 338 staff, of which 163 were made redundant overnight.
According to Gigwise.com, staff at the company’s stores in Scotland yesterday said they had no idea that the company was in trouble, and news came as a bombshell.
Speaking to the Daily Record, an employer said that receivers had told him to “’Go to the Job Centre’.” Workers at 10 shops run by Sound Control Holdings were sent home within hours of starting their shift.
One Scots worker with more than eight years' service said: "The bosses have not told anyone what is going on. I feel totally betrayed. When an employee asked one of the guys from the receivers what he should do, he was told, 'Go to the Job Centre'."
The Turnkey website currently states: “Whilst the Sound Control group remains in administration, no orders can be placed on this website”.
