NAMM 2008: RANDALL INTRODUCE KIRK HAMMETT SIGNATURE SERIES
Randall Amplifiers will be launching a new line of signature amplifiers, cabinets, modules and combos, all of which are designed and inspired by Metallica's legendary lead guitarist, Kirk Hammett.
Kirk Hammett started playing guitar at the age of fifteen and has gone on to become one of the most recognizable names in guitar playing history. He was the first inductee into Guitar World magazine’s hall of fame and was ranked 11th in the Rolling Stone's The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2003. He joined Metallica in the early 80s and has recorded and toured with them for 24 years. Now, he has lent his artistic and technical knowledge to create the new Kirk Hammett signature Randall products.
Said Hammett of the project, "This is the first time I’ve really done any kind of amp endorsement. I knew that there’s a lot of work that goes into it, and I’m really picky anyway. But things have turned out great. This is one amazing amp."
Hammett’s signature amp was based on the existing Randall Modular Tube System (MTS) and was tweaked to Kirk’s exacting specification. The design incorporates three separate all-tube preamp modules: one for Clean (KH1), one for crunch rhythm sounds (KH2) and one for high gain lead tones (KH3). Each tube preamp module includes two 12AX7s to suit Hammett’s musical needs and tastes.
From there, each tube preamp fits into an all-tube head (RM100KH) which includes three additional 12AX7 preamps tubes and is fueled by Kirk’s choice of four 6L6 power tubes. There are two straight-front 4x12 cabinet options to complement the RM100KH. The main cabinet (RS412KHX) includes two Celestion vintage 30s & two 75-watt Celestion G12T-75’s configured in an X-pattern. The second cabinet option (RS412KH100) is loaded with four 100-watt speakers that Randall co-developed with Celestion for extreme low end and power handling. Each cabinet includes Randall’s exclusive "Mic Eliminator" XLR direct outputs. "I’m really proud of how these modules and amps have turned out. There are a lot of great features. You can adjust the tube bias yourself, which is a cool thing. There are two effect loops – series and parallel – and it’s set up for MIDI switching."
In addition, there will be a premium limited-edition ½ stack (RM100KHLTD) fully pimped using solid maple cabinetry & AAAA flame maple caps. This custom ½ stack includes chrome hardware and is painted in a black burst color complete with polyurethane finish to match Kirk’s 20th Anniversary signature model ESP guitar. "It’s a great look," Hammett says.
In addition, Randall will offer two other Kirk Hammett signature products. The KH120RHS is a new ½ stack package that includes the KH120RH head and a KH412 cabinet. The 2-channel KH120RH is 120 watts and includes a clean channel with boost option an Overdrive channel with dual Gains and Contour control to sweep the mid-range and Spring Reverb. The 200 watt KH412 includes 4 x Celestion Rocket 50 speakers.
The other signature product is a 15 watt practice combo (KH15) with Clean, Overdrive with boost function, 3-band EQ, phone jack and CD/tape input.
