Guitar Magazine Hiwatt Hi-Gain 50 Review

Published: Mon January 14, 2008  News Feed

The classic Hiwatt Hi-Gain combo has been reviewed in the February issue of Guitar Magazine. Pete Townshend and David Gilmour fans, pay attention...

Hiwatt Hi-Gain 50 SER Combo

The Hi-Gain 50 Combo features Reverb, Mute, FX loop and speaker emulation. The clean channel is the exact circuitry that is used in HiWatts Custom Range Amps. But now you have Accutronics reverb, fx in out loop, amplifier mute so that you can use the pre-amp on its own through the specially designed speaker emulation circuitry. Push pull bright normal switch just like the channels on their original range.

According to Guitar Magazine, this amps gives you instant David Gilmour tones, if you plug a maple neck strat like he used in Pink Floyd. But that's not all: "the tone isn't just loud; it's huge, with massive but tightly controlled bass, and chiming clarity through the midrange. It's clean but not truly clean - all the valve-induced harmonic enhancement going on creates a larger than life quality."

The magazine's final verdict was a very positive one:

"Its personality packed tone provides two important insights. Firstly, you'll realise why Pete Townshend used Hiwatts for so long. Secondly, you'll understand why his hearing isn't tip top...good for valve-y clean and dirty sounds with real character."
