Merseyside band The Zutons (Dolphin Music customers, btw) recently added to the collection of classic beyerdynamic mics in their touring arsenal. With several models now forming a solid backbone in the on-stage line-up, FOH engineer Martin Mittler explains how the different mics have enhanced the band’s live sound.
“As I remember it started with an old M 88 on the bass amp, which is almost an industry standard. Then we put an M 69 on the saxophone because it can be shrill at times and the M 69 gives it much needed warmth whilst retaining enough presence. We use an M 201 for the snare top. This combined with a condenser for the under snare is fat and punchy. I combine the M 88 with a large diaphragm condenser for the guitars, which again sound fat and rich. The Opus 99 has recently been added for the bass amp. It sounds smooth and rich. Finally the TG-X 60 with its high output and smooth frequency response has been great for all of our front-line vocals. The tight hypercardioid pattern is great for cutting down on ambient stage noise and keeping the singers from straying too far off-axis.”

Martin adds: “The amount of beyerdynamic mics in our arsenal has steadily grown. Every addition has been a helpful and satisfying one”.
These microphones satisfy the demands of The Zutons UK and European tours, as well as live TV appearances such as Jools Holland’s Hootenanny.
