NAMM 2007: New Ashdown Classic bass amps are louder, deeper and even more dynamic
New Ashdown Classic bass amps are louder, deeper and even more dynamic
Winter NAMM 07 sees the launch of an uncompromising new series of high-end, British-built bass amplification from Ashdown Engineering. The company that already makes the bass gear used by players including U2's Adam Clayton, SOAD's Shavo Odadjian and the Foo Fighters' Nate Mendel is set to raise the bar even higher with Ashdown Classics – a range that includes 500 and 1000-Watt amp heads, three 500-Watt combos and four cabinets.
Central to the dramatically increased performance of the new Ashdown Classic bass amps is a new series of custom-developed Neodymium loudspeaker drivers which, in the opinion of Ashdown’s Mark Gooday, represents a quantum leap forward in bass driver technology.
“We're all used to Neo speakers being lighter in weight and high in power handling but, with these new Ashdown Neo drivers, that's only part of the story. They don't just soak up the power, they keep on getting louder as the level is increased with minimal distortion and a remarkable degree of tonal consistency over a wide variety of SPLs.”
Low distortion, high dynamic range and minimised power and pneumatic compression are achieved by a combination of advanced technologies including a die-cast aluminium basket with very thin brackets to avoid sound wave reflections on the rear side of the cone, the provision of loopholes on the basket below the spider to allow for fast cooling of the air moved by the voice coil, and a magnet circuit with heat-sink rims to allow for ventilation of the voice coil and the consequent dissipation of heat.
Turning to the Classics' amplifier section, Ashdown’s highly acclaimed feature set of variable tube grind, 7-band EQ and switchable sub-harmonic generator is supplemented in by a sophisticated dual-band compressor operating separately on the low and high frequency components of the signal, with straightforward operation ensured by a single control knob.
The inclusion of a 4-way footswitch as standard makes Ashdown Classic amongst the most versatile live performance bass amps around, providing control over the compressor, sub-harmonic generator, tube grind and EQ pre-shape.
“The Classic Series is all about staying ahead of the game,” continues Gooday. “These amps are designed without compromised and hand-built in the UK to deliver increased performance in every critical area – volume, tone, dynamics and versatility.”
Aimed squarely at the professional player, the Ashdown Classic range comprises of the Klystron 500 and 1000 heads, 500-Watt 115, 210 and 410 combos, and 810, 410, 115 and 115/410 cabinets. All combos and cabinets are equipped with the new Neodymium speakers.

Designed to meet the specific needs of the modern bass player, Ashdown’s Dual Band Compressor splits the signal into high and low frequency bands and applies compression separately to both – fast attack and decay for the high frequency and slow attack and decay for the low frequency or fundamental waveform of the note. The amount of compression applied to…
