VOX MINI3 Modelling Guitar Amplifier Ivory Reviews
The Vox mini 3 is a small 3 watt mains or battery modelling amp with effects, ideal for bedroom practice, busking/playing outdoors.
Measuring roughly 9.5 inches wide, 8 inches tall and 7 inches deep it is tiny, but this is one cool little amp and very cute with it.
You\'d think being so small and cheap that its going to be a bit of a joke or at least a let down, but this is one surprising little baby.
Btq Clean - sweet tones abound
Black 2x12 - Wow!! very good, my personal fav\'
Tweed 4x10 -It has the darker tweed tone down pat
AC15 - Sounds just like the real thing
AC30tb - Can almost smell the valves my second fav\' model
UK \'70s - Yep the gains going up, it does a good job
UK \'80s - Up another notch, nice rich marshall tone
UK \'90s - Now its singing but with that 90\'s marshall vibe
Cali Metal - Cooking and downright dirty
US Higain - To much for me, so you\'ll probably love it.
Line - pure clean line level signal - just what it says on the box
For the money there are some pretty credible amp models here, I can only compare to those on my old line 6 UX2 set up, these compare very favourably.
Effects wise there is enough there to be of use.
The compressor does its job just as it should.
The chorus can go from a slow rich sound to a deep warble
The flanger covers most from a phaser like slow sweep to a very credible organ type tone at full rate.
The tremolo has a vintage vibe to it, everything from slow pulses to staccato effects.
The delays work well with the tap function to set the rate, I particularly like the slap back you can get on the tape echo.
The reverb is sensible, with the most sensible and useful options supplied (spring and room).
Both work well but the room just backed off from max is very nice indeed.
So far my favourite setting is black 2 x 12, gain at 9 o\'clock, tone at 12 o\'clock, master to taste, tremelo on slowest setting, room reverb just backed off from max.
Used with the neck P90 on my PRS this gives me a lovely tone that I just cant leave alone.
Next favourite has to be the AC30TB, having been lucky enough to own one of the early ones I can say that this is not a bad model, keep the gain down for those lovely clean to crunch tones, crank it for more dirt with dynamics.
The flanger when used with a clean tone such as the black 2 x 12 and set to max speed gives a nice organ like tone that\'s a lot of fun to play with.
Your really cant fault the tones or effects this provides at such a low price point.
You know given its low cost (cheaper than a lot of single effects pedals) this is one amp that you should have just for the hell of it, if nothing else you can sling it in the car with some batteries and head for the beach for some sunset alfresco playing.
For those on a budget, well its damn hard to beat.
I needed a tiny bedroom amp with plenty of variation in tones available.
I searched the net and listened to most of the small amps, but this one stood out from the crowd.
Overall for me though it was the quality of the models and its overall sound, it was just a bonus that they came in such a cute package.
Vox just raised the bar a notch with this one.
