Laney VC15-110 15-Watt Guitar Valve Amplifier Combo Reviews
The Laney is a 15 watt all tube amplifier, boasting "pure class A/B" tones in a rugged yet compact design. The first thing you will noitce with this amplifier is just how light it is. On paper, 14Kg is still heavy, but when compared to amplifiers of a similar wattage it is just incredible. It is also incredibly well built, and in a simplistic manner, very pretty too.
My reason for buying this amp is because I am due to start at music college soon (RNCM), and I needed an amp to be versatile enough to allow me to work within many musical contexts, light but rugged enough to be carried around a city without any real struggles, and mostly, to have that fabled valve tone without breaking the bank should it need to be replaced.
The clean sounds, for me, are a perfect hybrid of a classic Brittish AC sound with a more Dexule American style, and works very well with the built in Reverb (I have it on 10 constantly, and it really enhances the natura tone of the amplifier). Of course, the beauty of a small wattage tube amp is that they can be cranked, but this Laney has suprising headroom, and can easilly be perfectly clean for a Jazz gig whilst even at a high volume. Engaging the bright switch adds a very musical chime to any instrument, and works particularly well with inbetween strat style sounds and otherwise muddy neck humbuckers. Engaging drive mode allows for a seperate drive and drive volume to be introduced. The most musical setting, in my opinion, is with the drive low but the volume higher, and this gives a wonderfully bluesy tone, very reminiscant of SRV. However, at full OD, the amp can really snarl, and with the use of a Tube Screamer you can achieve very convincing Paul Gilbert tones. The EQ consists of the classic Bass, Middle, and Treble, which unlike most other tube amps i've played, is incredibly responsive, and with the use of the Tone knob (cleverly situated at the end of the signal flow) you can create a vast array of valve tones.
Overall, I am incredibly impressed with the Laney VC15-110. Throughout the tones you will create, comes a comforting, timeless and exciting overtone which is only found in a tube amplifier of high quality, and at a price like this, it is almost perfect. The only other bonus that could have been added was a footswitch, but this doesn't hinder on the tone in any way what-so-ever.
A final thanks would have to go to Dolphin Music. Living in the Channel Islands can be tricky at best, but the service provided by the company has been outstanding. The amplifier came direct from Laney, and was recieved within a week of purchasing.
This is a great little amp. I\'m a big fan of the Laney sound which is a rich, full clean with good valvey break-up. You won\'t get pure crystal clean ala Fender amps but it gives a great, subtle bluesy overdrive when you push it. This little guy pumps out a lot of volume for the size of it. I start getting yelled at around 2 on the clean channel. Good overdrive, as others have mentioned not pure metal-fuzz but really smooth. And I really like the reverb - team it up with a slight delay and you get a huge rounded sound. Overall really happy with it.
Solid-built and finished in a classy black and chrome livery, the British-built Laney VC15’s key influences are obvious. But this class A/B amplifier is much more than a one-trick pony.
Straight out of the box, the clean channel is chimey, and allows for a surprising amount of headroom for such a small amp. The bright switch takes you into Fender territory, and does that ‘Johnny Marr thing’ very well. Crank things up a little, and things start to break up nicely. The Beatles, The Stones and The Who, are all in there somewhere.
The drive channel is where this 15-watt amp comes into its own. Partnered with the right choice of pedals, this channel will do just about anything – from light indie or Britpop crunch, all the way to those ‘We Will Rock You’ tones. And they’re all achievable at reasonable volumes too!
Of course, it would have been nice to see this packaged with a footswitch, but when you realise how much you’re actually getting from this amp - reverb, a Jensen custom speaker, effects loop, bright switch, speaker extension and both high and low inputs all come as standard - it doesn’t seem to matter too much! All for less than £300 too!
At first, I received a faulty amp but Dolphin replaced it as fast as possible. I received a new one just one day after returning the faulty one.
The amp is great. Clean channel is perfect for me. Drive channel is great for blues or rock but don\'t expect toplay hard or heavy metal with it. But it accepts my distortion stomp box easily and the result is dynamic and great.
You can play at home or for small gigs. Perfect for my personnal use.
