Les Paul History

The Les Paul Custom made it's debut in 1954 after the initial success of the Les Paul Goldtop. Les Paul said he suggested black as the color for the guitar because it looked "classy" and went well with a tuxedo on stage. From that point on, the Les Paul Custom has often been referred to as the "tuxedo" Les Paul. And with it's gold appointments, fully bound body, neck and headstock and mother-of-pearl inlays, we think you'll agree that the Epiphone Les Paul Custom is "dressed to kill".

At the heart of the Les Paul Custom is Great Tone Woods.

While all Les Pauls share common design features, the Les Paul Custom differed from the Les Paul Standard in that it's body was solid Mahogany without a Maple cap. Epiphone's LP Custom follows that tradition by using a solid, carved Mahogany body giving it a slightly mellower tone. Like the originals, attached to the body is a solid Mahogany neck with a hand-fitted, glued-in joint for optimum neck-to-body contact and acting almost like one continuous piece of wood. The neck features a very comfortable and fast "SlimTaper(tm)" neck profile that has become the most popular profile found on Les Pauls today. The result is a tribute to Les' timeless guitar design with the sound and feel that you can only get from a real Les Paul.

But quality construction and premium woods are only part of the equation.

At the heart of the Les Paul Custom is a pair of Epiphone Alnico Classic humbucking pickups. Patterned after the original Gibson '57 Classics, these pickups combine Alnico-V magnets with enamel wire to give you a tone that is warm and subtle with full, even response that doesn't hold back when you need that classic humbucker crunch! The neck pickup is an Alnico Classic while the bridge pickup is an Alnico Classic Plus. The "Plus" is slightly over wound to give it a little bit higher output without sacrificing its rich, vintage tone.

Loaded with premium add-ons!

Other premium features include Epiphone's LockTone tune-o-matic/stopbar combination for increased sustain and easy string changes, 16:1 ratio Grover machine heads, a 7-layer bound body, a 5-layer bound headstock and a comfortable single-layer bound Rosewood fingerboard. And like every Epiphone, it features their Limited Lifetime warranty backed by world famous 24/7/365 day Gibson Customer Service.

Epiphone Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar, Alpine White Reviews

Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro.

I bought one from Dolphin via the post so I was buying it blind. Having played the old custom many years ago I had a good idea what I was getting. It arrived the next day as promised in a box so big that the kids are now living in it out in the garden. It didn't come with a case so I got one while I was in a spending mood.
I'm one lucky guy. I own a couple of Gibson Standards and a Gibson SG, so I feel qualified to rate this one against the so called real thing. I own other guitars as well including Fenders and other Epiphones.
Taking it out of the box I was more than impressed with the finish. It was spotless and sure looked the part, with a good weight to it as well. It is beautifully finished. The gold hardware and black V and T knobs complimented by the binding give it a real feeling of quality. It had a low action, a bit too low for me so I raised it a bit when I put new strings it. Nothing wrong with the way it was set, I just like mine a bit higher. The frets are smooth and rounded you don't fell them when moving your hand up and down the neck. It's slick. The tuners wind up nice and evenly and the thing stays in tune even with a new set of tens on it. Unplugged there is no slap or buzz on the strings and the tone of the wood is nice and clear with a natural sustain coming through on the single notes. This is one playable guitar.
It was time to make some noise so I plugged it into my Fender Hotrod Deluxe. I don't find the need for effect pedals, I just go straight through and use the foot pedal on the amp to switch channels. I play punk so I don't have much need for the clean sounds but it was there I started. Flicking from the treble through to the Rhythm pickup I had a full spectrum of clear, clean notes and with the volume pots pulling out to give a single coil effect you can get whatever it is you are looking for.
This Custom Pro came on full song when the volume was raised and the amps natural distortion came into play. Face crunching sustain with big bold chords that can go on forever if you let them. A monster metal sound when switching phase to a full on distorted chord sound in Humbucker mode. Whatever your style you can play it on this guitar, with ease.
It all leaves me a bit confused...Personally I find hardly any difference between the Epiphone and the Gibson. There is though. The pickups on my Gibbo's require a bit less pushing to get the required response. The sustain on the Gibbo's is longer. But don't let that put you off. Remember, the Custom Pro comes in at under £500. My Gibson Les Pauls weigh more.
As you can see I have not bothered going into the technical specifications between the two makes. You can find that stuff out reading it on Dolphins site. I've just stuck to what I think matters or what matters to me. There is a difference and that's why Gibson's cost so much more.
They just do everything a bit better. Its £3500 versus £400.
As a guitar I think this Custom pro is awesome. I have fallen in love with it. It oozes quality and style. I love playing it. So much so that it is now my guitar of choice at gigs. Who cares what the name is on the headstock...This one says Epiphone.

The price you have found must be the Internet Retailer's regular, advertised price for a current and available item. The price you found cannot be a closeout, discontinued, blemished, year-end, inventory reduction, or any other type of advertised sale price.
