First thing, I don\'t want to be a dj. I\'ve bought the RMX because the thought of being able to mix my own mp3\'s has interested me for a while and also having something to mess around with when the mates come round after a night out. After much searching I decided on the RMX. Was a bit pricey for what I\'m using it for but it\'s one of those, do you go cheap and cheerful and get something which \'aint that much or spend the extra. I\'m glad I did, I think it\'s excellent for what I use it for. I haven\'t used any other mp3 mixer so I can\'t compare but for mixing tunes together (house music) it\'s great. A good friend is a dj, has been for a long time and was once quite a big name round these parts (before he had kids!) and I have to say I can now put his deck based dj\'ing to shame with this. I\'ve read a lot about how the scratch function isn\'t much good. It isn\'t, but I don\'t need it. If you\'re into scratching then you\'re going to have to spend the dollar for a high end piece of kit. But if you\'re just mixing songs then you can\'t go wrong. The only trouble I have is that only occasionally the dials and faders don\'t match up on screen with what is going on on the cosole, they seem to lag a bit behind. But I think that\'s because I\'m running it on Vista with other programs running in the background. It is PC intense so whatever you\'re putting it on make sure there isn\'t a lot running on it or you\'ve got a top spec pc/laptop. The only other gripe is you have to use the soundcard built in on the console when it\'s plugged in, which with my set up means I need to faf around with some leads to plug it up. Other than that I think it\'s a really good \"toy\". You could get away with using it in club I suppose but for home use it\'s perfect. Now planning to clean up the garage, put it some old speakers and have my own rave with the friends round! Oh, and Dolphin were great. Can\'t fault them.

This is a no-brainer - if you want to use your PC laptop for DJing, buy it - now! Sound quality is superb since they use high quality Cirrus Logic Crystal 24-bit DACs in the Mk2 - the midi controls are good and well laid out given the small size of the device. Works extremely well with Virtual DJ (bundled) and can be configured for other software like Traktor very easily. It's extremely portable and a breeze to use. Virtual DJ Pro (not included, but you can upgrade at a discount) can also use the Mk2 as an interface to two turntables running timecoded vinyl - which is how I use it in conjunction with it's top-surface MIDI controls. Highly recommended.

On paper, the Hercules looks like a fantastic deal. Loads of ins and out, a really low price, and who really needs 196khz anyway? I was won over by the spec of this unit, however more or less from the moment opening the box, and connecting my guitar to the Hi-z input, I was disappointed. At over 30cm long, the unit is deceptively large, when compared to the display images, and is not nearly as portable as is made out. Upon pressing the on button, there is a horrific torrent of thuds, crackles, pops and splutters, which are at best dangerous for your speakers, and at worst, painful, when using headphones. The two trim controlls for the analogue inputs on the front panel both hissed and crackled when touched, as did the headphone output. Also, when turned to near max, the signal from the inputs simply cut out. After about a week of light use, the unit developed a further fault, whereby after around twenty minutes of use, the unit spontaneously restarted itself. This resulted in the aforementioned torrent of fuzz, blips and thuds, and also caused any software currently using the device to crash. I would seriously recommend anyone looking at this unit to stop right now, and turn their attention to other products on the market, such as the Edirol Fa-101, the M-Audio 1814, or the yet to be released Alesis io26, as the Hercules is simply not to be trusted.

strenth: cool, semi-professional look. weaknes: crappy drivers worked well only on 1 of 4 machines i tested it with, customer support mumbling some buls..ts and can't realy help. If u wannago live with this card (like i did) you have to forget about it unless u use ASIO4ALL driver in my setup they work fin, but they are generic so it's not certain they gonna work for any other setup- i tested only my laptop. This is product for desperate 12-track-seekers and be adviced that the quality is noticeable worse than comparable M-Audio products. B
