The CAD M179 comes in a decent case with a nice shockmount. Faithful reproduction of a number of sources. The M179 is very transparent and excells in that area. Read the specs and you see a very good mic. Use the M179 in ANY area and you realize that you can have transparent reproduction at a low cost. It does have a decent proximety effect. You can get too close to this mic if you do not use the HP filter. The 20DB cut rules for drums!!! Bleed through is actually nice in the way it adds liveliness to the recording.

On electric guitar I like my rig sound just the way it is and need a good thump on the low to translate through, this mic delivers.

The acoustic guitars sound sublime, it counts alot on proper placement but once you get it it is amazing.

On Bass guitar it mixes great with a direct line.

Have not used on piano or strings, I have some amazing samples, but from what I can tell with using this mic for quite a while now, I have no doubt it will deliver.

For backing vocals it is excellent in any form. Kick it to omni and gather round the mic.

Vocals, I saved this for last because, this is the area I am torn on this mic. For some vocals the m179 is just too transparent and the voices needed help, break out the tube mic or I hope you have a decent tube pre.
However I have a friend with a delightfully rich and beautiful voice. Transparency was a MUST. One of those voices you want to hear it as it is.
with all mics and vocals the singer may not fit the mic. I find it hard to recomend any mic for lead vocals without hearing the voice of the singer. On the more common shot voice from too many shows but the singer is still good I have a hard time recomending this mic. Also I find this mic where vocals are concerned is much more suited for slower tempo/piano/acoustic projects.
One final thing for the lead vocal aspect of this mic. Test it while dialing through the patterns. This mic is awesome in the fact you can dial in, it is not 9 selections. It literally is a dial. With a quality (not nessarily exspensive) tube pre you can do a lot more with this mic for lead vocals. If you are looking for striclty a lead vocal mic that will help you find a signature sound this mic is not for you.

In ending, this mic is so good that you can go a lil rough on the EQ when trying to model a sound and it still has a good clean quality. So if looking for a versitile transparent mic. Get the M179 you will not be disappointed. If seeking a mic with some personality of it\'s own you will not get it without a tube pre. If even then.
I recently came into possession of this mic. It is very responsive and has good detail. I micked my halfstack to record with it and i was able to find my ideal tone.. I also used my amps feedback without irritation to the mic and the recording itself. I have yet to try it live and it does require phantom power which i would've preffered it to be powered on its own. Overall it had a good sound, but it did have a slight self noise that went unoticed in the recording. For the price this product is very satisfying. I recommend this as a steping stone for someone who is wanting to start building a small studio and wants to spend there money wisely.
ok, yes, i know 9/10 is a VERY high score but bear with me on this one... basically it boils down to bang per buck.. and as much as this is no neumann, all you have to do is check that price tag... se it?... You may have to look hard... it's quite small and you might miss it... Found it yet? Yep, that's right, 64... I've spent more than that in pizza hut! It's impossible for me to slag off anything about this mic at that price, I've been using it for about a year now (bought from Dolphin Music on their recommendation), after doing a bit of research and homework (as well as vocal analysis using Audition software) i decided that I'd take the plunge and risk a few quid (I'd budgetted up to 500 for my main mic purchase, attic studio you see, so even 500 seemed excessive)... the way i figured it, if the mic sounded nasty i could always chuck it on ebay and only lose a few quid... but, it's been the best 430 I've ever saved in my life :-) This mic does everything i need it to do, the freq response suits my voice marvelously, the price meant i could invest in more outboard gear and also buy a dedicated pre-amp instead of having to use the phantom power supplied by my Akai DPS16...
Before i started writing this i sat with pen and paper trying to think of something bad to say about this mic... I'm still trying... Erm.... I'll get back to you if anything suggests itself to me... No, i will really... erm... don't wait up though...
