Whilst not a total sea change, logic 9 is still a valuable upgrade for any logic user.

The improved time-stretching abilities aren\'t as gimmicky as apple has illustrated in their promotional videos but is a highly polished addition to the logic arsenal.

The amp modelling is very accurate. I found the AC30 modelling to be exceptionally close to my real amp. The guitar pedals are also welcome - providing an excellent studio resource but also good fun.

Its in the subtle tweaks were logic studio shines though. Improved non-destructive fading being one thing that springs to mind.

Main Stage 2, whilst a vast improvement over its predecessor still falls a little short of being a great all round live tool. Its still impressive though.
Fantasic little computer for anyone on a budjet or space restriction or if your looking to record on the move. I use mine with an Mbox 2 and it gives me all the power I need for recording multi channel and producing and mixing down tracks. Mac have as always made a lovely computer, very instinctive and easy to use. Fantastic battery life, enough power and ram for my apps, clear screen and packed with all the little features I need to do my musical thang!
I used to have Windows, but I decided to go for Mac for the great Media programs and there just really good!

These iMac\'s are amazing. If your a photographer, musician or some kind of media person this is amazing for you. Not only do you have that amazing 20 inch screen and very clean you don\'t need no tower because everything is built into the screen.

All you need is a Keyboard and Mouse (Comes with it) and you're ready to go!

The iSight camera is really amazing as well, perfect quality. Record videos or anything or pictures its really, really amazing and crisp.

iLife '08 is really good as well for those musicians you have the free program 'GarageBand' which is amazing, filled with amazing loops and effects.
And theres iDVD for those people who wanna make a DVD, and much, much more!

These computers are simply amazing. You will never change back to Windows after you get Mac.

They will last your for loads and loads of years as well. It is really worth the price.

As well as the great hard drive and memory and speed!
It is just a marvelous computer!

I would love to own a Mac of this quality - superb macine.

However, I was under the impression that Reason 4 (or any previous version) would not have improved performance from quad-core chips from duel-core (unlike Sonar/Cubase et cetera)!

Can you confirm this to be true or false please?

 User: Alexander Yevstifeev
Logic studio is a remarkably powerful yet easy to use audio production solution. The main upgrades from logic pro 7 are not the instruments or effects, but the layout and the ease of use. For example, the ability to assign a first and secondary cursor and switch be pressing the apple key is a lifesaver. It makes cutting, zooming, or drawing almost instantaneous operations to execute. Also, the intuitive placement of the channel strips for both the selected instrument and the entire track automatically at the side of the window allows for easy visualization and editing without opening another window.

In fact, everything that had its own separate window in pro 7 has been seamlessly integrated into pro 8. This in invaluable as it saves time and effort during midi editing and sample editing. In each case, all the needed information automatically comes up to the screen, for example the piano roll (previously the matrix) and the individual midi data pop up automatically when clicking on a midi track, while still showing the arrange window and channel strip. While this does make the windows rather small if your monitor is not very high resolution, you can open full windows with any of this information if you wish.

Searching for presets and loops is also more efficient as it is all available on one side of the screen in a tab menu called "lists" This is useful for searching for any kind of data needed.

Aside from the interface aspects, Logic pro is a tool that makes it astonishingly easy to create music that sounds easily better that an average recording. It is remarkably easy to use, and withing 10 minutes of opening the program, I was able to create a latin tune that sounded so real and so good that I couldn't tell the difference from it and a live recording. And I am by no means a seasoned Logic user. And with Space Designer, an amazing reverb plugin, you can take the clean crisp sound Logic creates and give it that perfect live feel, or whatever feel you want.

Of course, Logic studio doesn't just include Loic Pro, It comes with Mainstage, and Soundtrack pro, and the content from 5 jam packs. This content is what makes Logic so great for making any style of music you want and making it sound great.

Mainstage, in its infancy, is a great sounding program with nice features, and easy, seamless integration with any audio hardware controllers. It has customizeable sounds, piano, bass, beats, and pads for any performance need, in almost and style. It is slightly buggy, however, as in some cases the hardware controls controlled more than what they were assigned to, but overall a great program. A few update patches to fix the bugs, and mainstage will be ready for the road. I cannot comment much on soundtrack pro, because
I do not use it, but for the features and price tag of $500, Logic studio is a steal.
Some kind of midi keyboard is a must with this program, as with all DAW software. I recoment the Novation ReMote LE, it integrates so well with mainstage.
It's intuitive layout, massive sound library, and just downright fantastic sound makes anything possible for anyone with some basic keyboarding skills and the will to use them.
Having been a windows user for many years, it was a big scary step so i thought to switch to a Mac. How very wrong i was. The only scary thing about the Mac is how apparently clever it is. I took it out of the box and plugged it in, expecting the usual several hours setting up time, installing disk after disk, to install all peripheral devices. As soon as i started to set it up i realised that i should have switched to Mac years ago. It recognised every device i had, from printers to digital cameras and recording equipment. I have not had to install any extra software to enable these devices. I swear that if my toaster had USB the Mac would recognise it and ask how i would like my toast done. The sheer Speed of the Mac is phenominal, ( Mac speed must be close to light speed )afer being used to waiting for programmes and utilities to load it is so refreshing to click and have an instant response with everything. Dont let the price put you off, the time saved using a Mac is priceless, so the credit card ad says. All i can say is dont dither, go and buy one now. The only regret you will have is that you have wasted so many years using Windows based PCs.
Hi, I'm a Mac. I've had a G5 PPC for a while now, and was thrilled when the wife, who was laptop shopping, considered getting one of these. Of course I had some influence, and she approved because it was silver.
The extra features make this my prefered machine at times. The built in camera takes nice pics with photo booth and iphoto, and I learned how to make great movies surprisingly easy with imovie. The built in airport picks up the web at many spots around town with no problem. Putting 2 fingers down for 360 scrolling is genious. So is the magnetic power adapter connector.
Mostly, I enjoy this as my mobile sound studio. Very fast, and also useful for live performance, especially with the automatic light-up keys.
Had this machine for a couple of months now after being a lifetime PC user, I mainly use it for web design, graphics and music. I have to say, it is an absolute dream to use - lightning fast, light and compact and a great battery life.

Mac OSX is fantastic, such a breath of fresh air after using Windows for so long, when going back to Windows (I use it at work) it's like going back a couple of generations of technology, a bit like going from Windows XP back to Windows 95! It is very stable, I've never experienced an OS crash, but the couple of times some software has crashed, everything else has continues to function perfectly in the background - it's as if each piece of software has its own allocated resources and doesn't affect anything else.

The bundled software is also a big plus on OSX - the ilife suite is unbelievably good considering it's bundled in for free. If you use photoshop just to touch up your photos, forget it - iphoto will do it quicker, easier and just as well. Garageband is a perfectly respectable little sequencer, but is likely to be redundant if you're a serious music maker (same goes for iweb if you're a serious web designer or imovie if you're a serious video editor), the point is - out of the box your Macbook is a hugely capable multimedia machine which can very quickly broadcast a podcast, edit a movie and burn onto DVD, create a holiday slideshow and post to internet etcEUR the limits are endless!

My favourite feature though, the one that for me really sets it apart from any other laptop is Frontrow. Use the sexy little remote (bit like an ipod nano) to browse your itunes catalogue, control the DVD player, watch movie trailers or films on your hard drive, all from the comfort of your bed or sofa - then when you're done you can turn it off using the remote too - it's great for work and great for play.

I've realised now that this seems a very unbalanced review, I've not said anything negative about it. But I'm racking my brains to try and think of something - and really struggling! Maybe it's just the honeymoon period, but so far I have absolutely zero complaints about this machine.

A final bonus - what other machine lets you simultaneously run Windows, Mac OSX and Linux?! Even if you don't get on with OSX, it doesn't matter - you can use whatever you want! How can you loose?!
This is quite a ridiculous piece of kit. ItEURs so powerful that it is actually capable of going out and socializing on your behalf.

I tried to see just how far I could push it...64 instruments in reason (each with a full M-Class suite) running through Cubase alongside 100 Audio tracks with Waves C4 Plugins on each, and 30 Arturia Moog VST Synths (and this was without my audio interface plugged in!). In fact I had to try very hard to even cause it any problems at all!!! I can't think of many situations when you would need more power than this provides - even with some of the newer CPU-hungry plugins.

The screen is fantastic, and Boot camp is perfect if you have existing XP software you don't want to let go of. The only reason it doesn't get 10 points is because it isn't exactly cheap!

PC or Mac? A question which had been flowing around my head for some time. I thought about good and bad things about both. Which programs and what hardware do the two computers support? Which can I trust to be most stabile and long-lasting? I had read tons of reviews all over the Internet and sometimes I suspected myself for just wanting the Mac because of the design.
But when I finally got the money, I didn\'t even think about it. Immediately, I went to the nearest Mac-store and purchased one of the little duderinos. Of course I wanted a Mac! Partly because of the design, partly because of the use (music, study, video, pictures). I had always been hearing about how stable the Macs were and even though I also had read posts from a lot of angry users complaining about RSS (Random Shutdown Syndrome) and stuff like that, I just needed this white wonder. And I haven\'t regret it one bit.
When you first open he box, the thing that strikes you is the feeling of clean, stylish quality. All you do is plug it in the socket and turn it on, and you\'re golden. In the package you get a bunch of pre-installed, free software like Garage Band, iPhoto and iMove, etc., not to mention the iSight-camera which is an extremely small integraded webcam, located just above the screen. It takes great pictures and the effects in Photo Booth are hillarious.
The display is bright and shiny and compared to my dad\'s PowerBook I can see a clear difference in the brightness. When you first take a glance at the keyboard, you probably think it looks a bit weird and \"square-ish\" but as I\'m writing this review, the feeling on my fingertips is soft and gentle and I actually think that normal keyboards are a bit hard and clumsy to write on.
One little complaint: The integrated speakers are not very loud. I keep pushing the \"turn-up\"-button, and keep realising that it can\'t get any louder. Of course, this is not a major step back. I didn\'t expect to use the integrated speakers that much. Just plug in a pair of speakers and a subwoofer. I use a pair of Altec speakers with a medium-sized subwoofer, and that works great for me.
The interface is great. Options-bar at the top and a smart dock for a quick selection of programmes in the buttom of the screen. The design is so stylish and pure that I havenEURt even wanted to change the background yet.
Now, the problem that some Mac-users have had with the so-called RSS has probably/hopefully been solved with the new, free software-update Firmware 1.1 which is said to stop RSS and even to prevent potential shutdowns in the future on Macs that havenEURt even experienced the malfunction yet.
All in all, the MacBook is a very well-functioning laptop, and the only few bad things I can mention about it is: One: The harddisk is not the \"coolest\" and when you run programs like GarageBand. It reaches extremely hot temperatures and you sure get warm thighs. (handy during the winter though). Two: The sharp edges which makes red marks in my hands when IEURm spending too much time by the computer. A good reminder for people who spend too much time in front of their screen though; when your hands go numb, itEURs probably time to take a break. These two things are together the only reason why it gets a 9 and not 10. But what a great, big, huge 9.. Almost like a small 10..

The macbook is a very reliable and sturdy computer. Performance-wise this computer is highly recommendable to people who wan't to record - I have not yet experienced any type of weird behaviour from the Macbook and I've had it for 2 months now. The OSX interface is easy and actually makes more sense than XP (I'm a longtime XP user) e.g. to install a program you drag it into the programs folder. Voila! But give yourself a few hours to get acquainted with the interface - it does take a little getting used to.

For the people who wish to record their music on the macbook I recommend getting maximum ram (do this after you've bought the macbook as it is cheaper). It works great with 512mb ram but it's not enough for a demanding app like Logic.

You can also use BootCamp (d/l from apple) to install Windows XP on this beaty so there's no prob if you have to use a Windows app.

I give this product a 9 - the fact that there's not a lot of gfx power in this machine will scare gamers away - -1 point. You can play games on this though, WoW, Doom3, CoD3 so it's not impossible to have a bit of fun.

I have been composing with computers since 1979. Back then it was with a 32 meg machine, and the stuff was pretty new.

I got involved with Logic audio around 1990 and have used Logic Gold 4.8 EXS, Platinum 5 among others. It is THE only choice for me, for music composition software. I have tried a lot of other ones out there, but none come close....

The same applies to my Logic Express 7-series software. The same intuitive interfaces, and attractive to boot...Recording is a breeze...

Once a newcomer to Logic understands the difference between an audio instrument and an audio track, and gets his/her head around setting up the environment, This is really the best program around. The simplest ( but VERY important ) difference in Logic is that it is so easy to change parameters on everything.

For example:

If you record a sax player and he/she hits a bad note..or it's a bit flat, you simply go to the Matrix editor and you see all the notes that were just played. The notes are all represented by horizontal bars. The longer the bar, the longer the duration of the note. The difference in color of the bars represents the velocity (or volume) of the note. If you want to increase the pitch of the note, just double click on the 'bar' (note) and you will be transported to another window which allows one to (with a drag-and-drop action)perform all kinds of changes in the notes--to amazingly small degrees.

Once you are happy with the pitch of that note...go back to the matrix editor, because you ALSO wanted to shorten the length of the note. Simply grab the end of the bar with your mouse and slide it on back until ( after re-playing the section, of course ) you have the right duration of the note...

I could go on and on, but Logic has really been the leader in recording and production software for a long time now, and I am happy to be still there. I DID have to buy a Mac system to use Logic, but it's all for the best.

Regards,

Ray

Got a very similar model... 1.33 GHz 14 inch ibook... Must be the one before. The only thing I added was RAM, it came with 256MB I added another 1GB, now it has 1.25 GB RAM which, in my opinion, RAM is one of the most important things you have to have in abundance, since the machine works more freely, specially in audio and video. Only drawback, no audio input (analog), yet, working with a firewire connected soundcard, solves that without any troubles... Chepear and, in my opinion, more comfortable than the powerbook, since it is made from a rough special kind of plastic. So that's about it...
I was thinking of a PC but the Apple PowerBook 12" SuperDrive had everything I wanted and I had never tried a mac, It is a real nice computer it really is built well and the OS X is real easy and nice to use, the only thing is Apple don't seem to really support the drivers for anything other that OS X for the Airport this is a real shame if you want to use linux on the box as well, it feels like they have taken lots of BSD and GNU work and just blocked everyone out of really using the computer for anything other that OS X, well apart from that it is a great small computer with a load of power, just one other thing, if you want to use the audio when the computer is plugged in, earth the computer or you get a very slight hum, or use unplugged, or keep a hand on the case! I still real like it... Thanks
