Premium 2-Channel DJ Production Console With Analog VCA Circuitry

The Ultimate 2-Channel Console For Performance And Production.

Introduced in 2006, the original Mackie d.2 DJ mixer was an instant success thanks to its studio-grade sound quality, incredible feel, and built-like-a-tank construction. Now the new d.2 pro picks up where the original model left off, with enhanced FireWire capabilities for direct connection to Mac or PC, more flexible routing, and Traktor® Scratch certification for spinning digital music files using standard turntables with specially coded vinyl. Taken together, this enhanced feature set elevates this two-channel mixer into a true DJ performance and production console.

The d.2 pro console brings its unrivaled sound quality courtesy of premium studio grade VCA-based analog circuitry, audiophile-grade phono preamps, an Infinium® contact-free crossfader, and XLR balanced main outputs. So you get studio-quality sound, Mackie’s hallmark “built-like-a-tank” construction, and enough flexibility to place it at the center of any professional performance or serious DJ/remixer studio.

Full-Features Firewire Connections.

The d.2 pro is the first two-channel DJ-style console to offer onboard 13x6 FireWire connectivity with 24 bit/96kHz sampling rates. So you can plug directly into your FireWire-ready Mac or PC (Mac OSX 10.3.9 or higher, Windows XP, SP2 or higher), and start spinning all your digital music files from iTunes, Traktor Scratch, Ableton Live and more (see sidebar). The d.2 pro’s FireWire connectivity also lets you record your sets and original music productions directly to your computer without any additional hardware. This makes it a complete solution for building mix CDs, recording podcasts, broadcasts, or any one of dozens of other applications.

Production And Performance.

A small DJ/remix studio typically includes many different components, from turntables to a laptop. So we made sure you could connect a wide range of gear into a d.2 pro simultaneously and “tie it all together.” No more audio interface. No more mess of cables. But we didn’t sleep on the d.2 pro’s performance features either, so you’ll be equally at home using it in the club.

In addition to its super straightforward layout, the d.2 pro’s performance features include:

  • An Infinium® optical, no-contact crossfader with adjustable tension
  • Mackie-designed turntable and premium Mackie mic preamps for superior detail and maximum "punch"
  • Smooth 3-band analog EQ with full kill capabilities
  • 3-position, spring-loaded Transform switches
  • A solid 14-gauge all-steel chassis (substantially thicker than our competitors)
  • These components directly contribute to the legendary sound quality and durability which have become Mackie hallmarks.

Scratch Your Digital Music Files

Like the flagship d.4 pro, the d.2 pro is among a small handful of audio interfaces that’s Certified Traktor® Scratch Ready. What’s this mean? By upgrading the d.2 pro with Native Instrument's Traktor® Scratch Upgrade software, you can mix and scratch digital music files on your computer using your standard turntables and CDJs with specially coded vinyl and CDs. While other DJ mixers require additional hardware to interface with special 'timecoded' vinyl control records and CDs, the d.2 pro is set up to interpret Traktor’s external timecode directly, allowing you to pull up your entire digital track library, right on your trusty ol’ 1200s. Find out more about this amazing software here.

Tracktion 3

When its time to start making your own beats, the included Tracktion 3 music production software has your back. The production hardware bundle is easy-to-use software gives you unlimited track count*, and it comes loaded with a staggering library of loops, instruments, and stunning effects. Designed around a simple, single-screen interface, Tracktion is the fastest, most powerful way to turn your musical ideas into finished songs. Go to the Tracktion 3 page and get all the details.

*Track count is only limited to your computer’s resources

The Infinium Crossfader

How could we create such a killer DJ console without paying special attention to the crossfader? We couldn’t. The d.2 pro’s Infinium contact-free crossfader delivers precise, ultra-smooth response for years... no matter how much you scratch. And without the risk of dust and grime deteriorating its audio performance, this crossfader will sound as good in 10 years as the day you bought your mixer. Featuring an adjustable tension control, which can be set using a small screwdriver, the Infinium crossfader’s feel can be customized to be as loose or tight as you desire.

An Analog VCA Design

For the tech-heads out there, we figured you’d want to know a bit about the the d.2 pro’s analog circuitry. Specifically, the d.2 pro uses an all-analog Voltage-Controlled Amplifier (VCA) design with ultra high-performance components, tuned to provide the maximum headroom and lowest noise of any mixer in its class. Thanks to this VCA design, the d.2 is immune to the deterioration in sound quality that often plagues traditional DJ mixers. Dust particles and the general crud of life wrecks old-school faders — but VCA faders power right through these obstacles night after night, year after year, to deliver rock-solid performance with zero audio degradation. VCAs also let you fine-tune the curves of the faders to perfectly suit your style, and even reverse them via conveniently positioned controls.

Mackie d2 Pro Reviews

Mackie D.2 Review *also*

Forgot to mention one last thing (picky I know) but it\\\\\\\'s an odd size. For some reason Mackie decided that even though every other mixer in the world is as tall as a set of turntables, the D.2 will be taller I\\\\\\\'d say approx 2-3cm higher than my Vestax PDX-2000\\\\\\\'s... a problem, well It felt odd to me..lol

Mackie D.2 Review

Ok, let me say that on first impressions I thought this mixer was excellent, in fact on first use and continued use it never failed to impress. Being a scratch DJ, I bought mine based on the new \"infinium\" crossfader and sure enough it was amazing to use. Not only could you adjust the tension of the fader but also the cut in time (though it doesnt mention it in the manual).

However after around 6 months of bedroom use, and being looked after, in fact not even abused that much considering I scratch a lot, it started to die! First was the headphone cue, now this one may be a one off issue as I never used headphones until one day I decided to use them and the cue was broken (It worked when I got it). It basically deafened you on one channel even if turned to a minimum. I checked my setup, checked the connections which meant a long strip down, cleaned the heaphone fader, still it was broke.

I then got in touch with Mackie, though this too was a long process and I cant say I found them helpful at all considering I was very polite. After coming up with no real solutions except forking out more cash, I decided to leave it as I didnt use headphones that much and the crossfader was great.... or so I thought... less than one month later the crossfader jammed rendering it useless. Again I had to pull the thing apart and turned out it was a tiny magnet that adjusts the crossfader tension had come loose. Again I fixed it with glue and hoped for the best.

Literally a week later and the crossfader is now bleeding like mad from both sides which is odd as I\'ve hardly scratched the opposite way...so much for the everlasting infinium fader!

One more annoyance that flawed an otherwise well performing (for a while) mixer is that the curve control on the input faders is garbage. You cant get them to a sharp cut and this will annoy any decent scratch DJ.

So to sum up (lol) I give it 3 stars as it could have been an amazing mixer, maybe I got a dud? I dont know but at this price buyer beware! The mackie forum has a fair few posts on D.2 problems and theres even a youtube video. I have since gone back to my trust Vestax 06 pro that despite being battered has never stopped working or needed fixing in over 7 years! Go figure.

Mackie D2 reviewed

If you want to remind yourself how effective simple cutting can be.. buy a Mackie D2.

The accuracy of up the faders coupled with a the reverse switch is sweet. Simply sweet. I have spent quite a few hours on this alone.

The transform switch is also great fun. With off being in the middle and down positions, its quick and easy to replicate a 'euro scratch' which is to scratching what the speed of light is to, well, the speed of light. Fantastically fast.

The rotary eqs kill to infinity, and make a lovely sound on their way out. Quality oozes from them. And they light blue which is a very handy thing in a darkened room.

The crossfader is as lovely as an orchard. Just play with it, adjust its tension to your taste, and cut it up. It will improve your cuts.

Its build to standard 10 inch size, it will slot right on in where your old mixer was. Say bye bye to the old mixer. It’s gone. The Mackie is here to stay.

And I haven’t even got to the firewire card aspect of this mixer. And I don’t need to, its such a good mixer the elements I just described should sell it to you.

The rest is a bonus, an absolute bonus. No complaints with this mixer whatsoever.
