It was way back in Spring when the phone started to ring. We wanted to get the shiny new V-Piano in front of Gary Barlow: singer, song writer, and architect of the biggest comeback since Halley’s Comet. Tough call though, what with Gary climbing mountains, hurting his back en-route then doing promo for the recently-released Take That album and rehearsals for the biggest UK tour in history, with a paltry 1.08 million people seeing the band.
The chance came when we were invited to Sunderland to show Gary the V-Piano before the first preview gig, scheduled for the night before the tour began. We dutifully set the V-Piano up in a small dressing room and Gary - along with band member Mark Owen and Gary’s protégé Gary Go - powered it up. Keys were played, bumps were goosed, glances exchanged and judgements made: Gary ordered the V-Piano to be hauled on stage, replacing his incumbent keyboard. Aiding the techs, we carried the V-Piano onto the huge stage and the sound checking began. Fast forward to the present and Gary has used the V-Piano every night on the tour and now wants one for his studio to record with – praise indeed from the songwriter’s songwriter.
