Originally Akai Electronic Company Ltd, The Akai brand was created by Saburo Akai in 1929 in Japan. From the early days the company’s product range has included reel-to-reel audio tape recorders, tuners, audio cassette decks, amplifiers, receivers and loudspeakers. The company manufactured video cassette recorders in the 1980s and the Akai VS-2 was the first VCR capable of displaying information on the TV screen.
At present, Akai are producing a multitude of different products including digital MIDI sequencers and synthesizers, popular among a large number of musicians and producers, particularly those of the Hip Hop genre and electronic musical persuasion.
Akai entered the electronic music industry with one purpose, to give artist the tools they need to express and explore new musical possibilities. Now, standing at the forefront of digital technology, Akai remains one of the most influential manufacturers of music equipment in the past 20 years.
Rapper, record producer, record label executive, entrepreneur and actor, a man of many talents is Dr. Dre. The doctor has collaborated with the likes of Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Missy Elliott on huge tracks like ‘The Next Episode’ and ‘I Need a Doctor’, and has produced for a number of artists including 2Pac, Nas and NWA. The entrepreneur has achieved a staggering 6 Grammy Awards throughout his career and an MTV VMA for best rap in a video for the hit ‘Forgot About Dre’ Featuring Eminem.
It was reported that Dre is a devoted customer of Akai and that his primary instrument in the studio is the Akai MPC 3000 drum machine and sampler. Dre claims that he often uses as many as four or five different MPC 3000s to produce just a single recording.
