Apple iMac G5 announced

Published: Wed September 01, 2004  News Feed

Apple has unveiled the new iMac, mounted entirely in its display. The iMac G5 is, says Apple, the world\'s thinnest desktop compute, with a 17in or 20in LCD display, slot loading drive and G5 processor squeezed into a 2in thick casing.

\'Just like the iPod redefined portable digital music players, the new iMac G5 redefines what users expect from a consumer desktop,\' said Philip Schiller, Apple\'s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. \'With the entire system, including a gorgeous 17- or 20in display, just two inches thin, a lot of people will be wondering \"where did the computer go?\".\'

The 17in models come with either a 1.8GHz G5 processor and a SuperDrive or a 1.6GHz G5 processor and a Combo drive. The 20in model has a 1.8 GHz G5 processor and a SuperDrive.

The iMac has a completely redesigned system architecture, with a maximum 600MHz front-side bus, 400MHz DDR memory expandable to 2GB, AGP 8X graphics and 7200rpm Serial ATA drives up to 250GB.

The iMacs include all Apple\'s core applications - iCal, Address Book, Mail, Safari - as well as the iLife suite for managing digital images and ordering prints and books, authoring and burning DVDs, editing movies and making music.

The entry-level 17in Combo drive model is £919; the 17in SuperDrive model is £1,049; the top-of-the-range 20in model is £1,349.

The previous iMac range started at £999 rising to £1,749, so the new range represents a considerable increase in value.
