Yamaha Montage Synthesizers

Published: Fri January 22, 2016  News Feed

The new Yamaha Montage keyboards are the most powerful synthesizers from Yamaha. Following on the footsteps of - and improving on - the DX and Motif range, the new Yamaha Montage synths are simply amazing!

Yamaha Montage Synth

The Yamaha DX and Motif ranges changed the industry, but the new Montange synthesizers offer even more, sophisticated dynamic control, massive sound creation and streamlined workflow all combined in a powerful keyboard designed to inspire your creativity. They are versatile synths to use live on stage, or in the studio.

There are three models available: The Montage 6, Montage 7 and Montage 8. They have 61-, 76- and 88-keys, respectively. The first two have FSX keyboards, while the latter features Balanced Hammer Effect keys.

Here's a great demo of the new keyboards:

HOW DOES MONTAGE COMPARES TO DX7 & MOTIF SYNTHS?

The classic Yamaha DX7 synth is one of Yamaha's best loved keyboards ever. Manufactured from 1983 to 1989, it's been used by everyone - from Stevie Wonder to Depeche Mode, from U2 to A-Ha, Vangelis, Enya, The Cure, Besitie Boys... it's hard to find a famous name who didn't use one in the Eighties! So, it's natural that many synth enthusiasts have been hoping for a reissue. But we don't need it, thanks to Montage!

The new synth is much better -
its FM synthesis engine (known as the FM-X) is an extremely powerful synthesiser offering you a total of 8 operators, even more than the much loved Yamaha DX7! So yeah... you can sound like a Vangelis, but also do much, much more!

Fans of the Motif series won't be disappointed, either. When the original MOTIF was released in 2001, it was recognized as the best sounding, top selling and most requested music workstation on the market. But now, the Montage series takes the Motif's capabilities even further! Montage's
onboard AWM2 engine, which delivers subtractive as well as high quality waveform sounds, has been greatly expanded. So much so that with over 5GB of samples, its capacity is nearly 10 times that of the Yamaha MOTIF XF!  .

And, powered by proprietary Yamaha technology for data compression and sound playback, AWM2 allows tremendous data compression without sound quality loss for unparalleled, realistic sound reproduction. With
more samples per instrument, you get much more realistic and nuanced sound. The sound quality of the Montage keyboards is really something else!

In other words - if you're looking for the best possible synthesizer keyboard for live performance, Montage is your top choice!

BEST NEW YAMAHA MONTAGE FEATURES

Yamaha Montage's Super Knob
Super Knob

One of the best new features on the montage is the Super Knob. It allows you to c
reate dynamic sound changes from radical to sublime, and control multiple parameters simultaneously - resulting in anything you can imagine! For example: change your listening position from right in front of an instrument to in the back seat of a concert hall. Or radically change the character of a Performance from atmospheric and mellow to rhythmic and edgy.

The Super Knob can even be assigned to a second FC7 foot controller making it easy to manipulate the sound when playing with both hands.

Motion SEQ

Motion Sequences are tempo-synchronized, completely customizable control sequences that can be assigned to virtually any synthesizer parameter and provide incredible creative new ways of programming sound. Motion Sequences also have dedicated controls on the front panel making it easy to manipulate and change in real-time, providing incredible interactivity and expression.

Envelope Follower

The Envelope Follower converts audio into a control source for control of virtually any synthesizer parameter. For example, a drum loop could drive effects parameters for a cool rhythms or a vocal recording could control multiple parameters for a “talking” synthesizer. The audio can even be a “live” source through the A/D input.

Motion Control Synthesis Engine

Motion Control Synthesis Engine unifies and controls the two iconic Sound Engines: AWM2 (high-quality waveform and subtractive synthesis) and FM-X (modern, pure Frequency Modulation synthesis.) These two engines can be freely zoned or layered across eight parts in a single MONTAGE Performance.

Pure Analog Circuit

Montage features professional balanced outputs with “Pure Analog Circuit” (PAC). PAC improves the quality of signal after being converted to analog from digital for clear harmonic reproduction and even frequency response. The result is an output capable of reproducing MONTAGE’s internal content expressively with power and clarity.

A/D Input

The A/D input processes external audio sources with your instrument’s DSP. Use mics, guitars or any line source as an input and process with the internal effects. You can even use these sources with the Envelope Follower or Sidechain for a truly unique sound!

PERFORMANCE RECORDER

The Montage offers 16 Sequence tracks, Tempo track and Scene track, and thre recording types: Real time replace, Real time overdub, Real time punch in/out.

Other features include:
  • Note Capacity: Approx. 130,000 notes
  • Note Resolution: 480 ppq (parts per quarter note)
  • Tempo (BPM):  5 – 300
  • Songs: 64 songs
  • Arpeggio Parts: 8 Parts simultaneous (max.), Preset: Approx. 10,000 types User: 256 types
  • Sequence formats: MONTAGE original format, SMF formats 0, 1

WHAT'S YAMAHA MONTAGE COMPATIBILITY WITH OLDER DX & MOTIF SYNTHS?

Yamaha Montage 8

MONTAGE is directly compatible with Motif XF Voices and Yamaha is also developing an FM converter to make it compatible with DX7 series Voices.

Compatibility with the MOTIF XF

In terms of sounds, the MONTAGE is fully compatible with the Yamaha MOTIF XF synthesizer. In fact, the MONTAGE comes with all of the MOTIF XF’s 1,353 voices, 3,977 waveforms, and 7,881 arpeggio patterns. Furthermore, voices saved in the MOTIF XF can be imported directly into the MONTAGE. Likewise, patch libraries for the MOTIF XF, including third-party patch libraries, can be loaded into the MONTAGE and played.

MOTIF XF file type MOTIF XF filename extension Description
All .X3A
User voices, user arpeggios, user waveforms
All Voice .X3V User voices
All Arp .X3G User arpeggios
All Waveform .X3W User waveforms

Notes:

When loading user samples based on original waveforms, the .X3A file extension should be used. The MONTAGE does not recognize the MOTIF XF’s Performance data.

Compatibility with Yamaha synthesizers other than the MOTIF XF

While the MONTAGE cannot directly read the voice data of Yamaha synthesizers other than the MOTIF XF, it can read such data via music editing software for Windows and Mac computers. The methods and requirements for doing so differ depending on the synthesizer model, so please refer to the details provided below.
Compatibility with the Legendary FM Synthesizers

The classic yamaha DX7

The FM Converter Web App will provide a mechanism for MONTAGE owners to convert their legacy FM libraries and onboard legacy product content to MONTAGE native User File Format. Compatible model are DX7, DX7II, TX802 and TX816. This service will be available from May.

Compatibility with the MOTIF XS

The voices of Yamaha’s MOTIF XS synthesizers can be loaded into the MONTAGE by using MOTIF XF Editor VST software. Only voices that are based on the MOTIF XS’s internal waveforms can be read, so voice files created using user samples cannot be loaded. The steps for loading a voice file are as follows.
  1. Save the voice data in the MOTIF XS. Select either All Files (.X0A) or All voice Files (.X0V) as the file save format.
  2. Import the saved file using MOTIF XF Editor VST.
  3. Save the imported file using MOTIF XF Editor VST. Use the file extension .X3E.
  4. Load the saved .X3E file into the MONTAGE via USB flash memory.
Compatibility with the S90 XS and S70 XS

The voices of Yamaha’s S90 XS and S70 XS synthesizers can be loaded into the MONTAGE by using both MOTIF XF Editor VST and S90 XS/S70 XS Editor VST software. The steps for loading a voice file are as follows.
  1. Save the voice data in the S90 XS or S70 XS. Select either All Files (.X2A) or All Voice Files (.X2V) as the file save format.
  2. Copy the saved file via USB flash memory, and open it using S90 XS/S70 XS Editor VST.
  3. Save the copied file using S90 XS/S70 XS Editor VST. Use the file extension .X2E.
  4. Import the saved .X2E file using MOTIF XF Editor VST.
  5. Save the imported file using MOTIF XF Editor VST. Use the file extension .X3E.
  6. Load the saved .X3E file into the MONTAGE via USB flash memory.
Compatibility with the MOTIF ES

The voices of Yamaha’s MOTIF ES synthesizer can be loaded into the MONTAGE by using both MOTIF XF Editor VST and MOTIF ES Voice Editor software. Note, however, that since the internal waveforms of the MOTIF ES and the MONTAGE do not match, the MOTIF ES’s compatibility with the MONTAGE is equivalent to its compatibility with the MOTIF XS. Only voices that are based on the MOTIF ES’s internal waveforms can be read, so voice data created using user samples cannot be loaded. In addition, MOTIF ES Voice Editor may not be compatible with the latest versions of computer operating systems, so a computer able to run the software will be needed. The steps for loading a voice file are as follows.
  1. Save the voice data in the MOTIF ES. Select either All Files (.W7A) or All Voice Files (.W7V) as the file save format.
  2. Copy the saved file via USB flash memory, and open it using MOTIF ES Voice Editor.
  3. Save the copied file using MOTIF ES Voice Editor. Use the file extension .W7E.
  4. Import the saved .W7E file using MOTIF XF Editor VST.
  5. Save the imported file using MOTIF XF Editor VST with the file extension .X3E.
  6. Load the saved .X3E file into the MONTAGE via USB flash memory.
