Roland MX-1 Aira Mixer Announced

When we first saw the MX-1 we furrowed our brows, scratched our heads a little and then nipped off to make a brew to calm ourselves down. Was the latest member of the Aira clan really a mixer? With many of the analogue connections, EQ, FX and USB connectivity you might expect from a standard modern mix console. After checking it out a little more we suddenly felt our minds expanding and nearly burning out as the creative potential of this master work became clear.

The Roland MX-1 lets you jack in via 6 analogue inputs, connect 4 Aira units via USB connectors and digital Coaxial I/O. This will suit just about anyone with a hardware setup as the MX-1 lets you apply tempo sync effects on a per channel basis, a range of master FXs to glitch up or breakdown the whole mix and DJ style isolator EQ for radically reshaping on the fly. If you work in the box then the MX-1 is something of a game changer too, allowing you to route audio to and from a computer and apply the same FX. It also functions as a full blooded MIDI controller, so you can jump from tweaking the DAW mix balance in the box and then severely FSU using the MX-1, making a hybrid setup that is both practical and creative in the extreme.

That's just a brief overview and really we can't see any electronic production setup that wouldn't benefit from the MX-1. The options are limitless and the System 1, TR-8, VT-3 and TB-3 have already proven Roland are on top form creating inspirational gadgets that blur the lines between production, performance and DJing. The MX-1 is like the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle allowing them to all work together, with other hardware, with your DAW, with other MIDI controllable synths and of course with other Aira units.

  • Already using a standard mixer in a hardware/analogue setup? The MX-1 offers way better features on the front panel, who needs a 3 band EQ or buss outs when you're playing live electronica.
  • Already got an audio interface in a computer setup? The MX-1 offers MIDI functionality and FX galore for more creative options in the box, with no CPU overhead. There's no redundant IO on the MX-1 either, designed purely for creative production purposes.
  • Already own some Aira units? Well it's a no brainer frankly. Rather than explain why we'll just tell you to check the video below.
