The Return of Three Legendary Moog Modular Synths!

Published: Mon January 19, 2015  News Feed
As we first wrote on our NAMM 2015 article, this will be the year of the analogue synths, with many exciting new releases... or, quite often, exciting re-creations of classic synths from the past. But still, Moog's announcement of the resurrection of three of their most legendary modular synths was a major - and welcome - surprise!

the return of Moog modular synths!
Why should we be so excited about the re-creation of instruments originally made decades ago? Well, modular, analogue synths are fascinating, complex instruments that actuallynever age - always offering a new world of musical possibilities. They sounded like the future then, and still do today.

"It's important to have access to modular synthesizers because having your hands on them, and having your mind locked into them, gives you the love and hability to discover sounds in great detail." said Herb Deutsch, co-inventor of the original Moog Modular Synth.

As we wrote on our 50 Years of Moog article, Moog synths have been an important part of modern music since the seventies, and, by the looks of it, they'll remain just as important.

The Moog System 35, System 55 and Model 15 will make a return, but in very limited quantities: 35 copies of the System 35, 55 copies of the System 55 and 150 copies of the Model 15... with prices starting at $10.000 for the cheaper Model 15, and the more expensive System 55 costing $35.000! Fair to say, that these big, hand-built analogue synths are not for everyone's budgets!

But this doesn't mean we can't get excited about it. We should, and we are, because it's a definite sign of the times, a shift to a more human (and analogue) approach to music... which can be seem everywhere in the past few years, from the success of vinyl records, to the popularity of the mini Korg monotrons. We just can't get enough analogue, it seems!

And where Moog leads, others will certainly follow. Be sure of one thing - you'll hear a LOT about analogue synths in the next 12 months...
