Hans Zimmer Gear Guide + UK Dates Announced!

Published: Wed September 17, 2014  News Feed
Great news for film-score fans: celebrated soundtrack composer Hans Zimmer (Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy, Gladiator, Inception, Pirates of the Caribbean, Sherlock Holmes) will play his first ever live dates in the UK! Find out more, and check our Hans Zimmer Gear Guide!

Hans Zimmer is coming to the UK! Check his complete gear guide...

The Oscar-winning Zimmer will showcase his vast repertoire at two London dates, on October 10th and 11th.

Talking about the performances, he said:  "Performing a concert series like this is something that I have always wanted to do, and I am thrilled that that time has finally come. I am very excited to get some of my very talented friends together and give our audiences an experience unlike any concert they have ever been to before."

Unlike famous film composers from the past, Zimmer is part of a new breed who's very keen on DAW and computer music, and his classic-sounding scores were created using a wide range of gear the modern musicians will be familiar with, often appearing on the final mixes of his famous scores: Steinberg Cubase, Pro Tools, Spectrasonics Omnisphere, and UAD Plug-Ins, to name but a few.

His studio looks pretty amazing, by the way!

For many years Zimmer has used a DBX 160 Compressor for his drum sounds, though now he prefers to use a DBX 160 plug-in. But he still uses some great hardware, too, such as the Universal Audio LA-2A compressor and Universal Audio 1176 Limiter.

One of his "secret weapons" has always been the Roland Space Echo RE-201 (now resurrected as the Boss RE-20 twin pedal) which Zimmer says was his "bread and butter" because it can make anything "instantly sound fantastic".

He only works in Surround now, and all his mixing goes through a Euphonix System 5.

Among the real instruments he uses in his studio, a Moog Minimoog Voyager could be seen in certain photos.

Zimmer is also a proud owner of the revolutionary ROLI Seaboard keyboard, a Grand that doesn’t have "keys" but a black silicone surface that align neatly and ripple and undulate across the surface. It has a range of sensors carefully engineered to respond to pressure and hold time. They connect to the sound engine, so that each note can be manually varied in ways that other piano keys can’t:

Zimmer said:

“Having the Seaboard in front of me is inspiring. It has a sensual touch, which feels intuitive and very human. The Seaboard shows us how to get beyond the boundaries of the keyboard, a technology that was invented hundreds of years ago. Many people have tried and failed to do this; Roland Lamb and his team are actually much closer than anyone else has ever come to doing so, and thereby establishing a new, truly expressive digital instrument.”

To find out more about this incredible instrument, read our ROLI Seaboard blog. For those interested in this instrument, but find it too expensive, good news: ROLI has just released the much more affordable RISE 25-Key Controller Keyboard, basically a mini-version of the Seaboard Grand!

His main Sample Library / Virtual Instrument is his own recordings of the London Symphony Orchestra. However, he's expected to make use of a live orchestra at his forthcoming dates. And, who knows, he might even get The Smith's Johnny Marr to join in... after all, Marr performed on Hans Zimmer's Oscar-nominated score for Inception! Film music fans have many reasons to be excited!

Hans Zimmer is also one of our customers! As sole UK retailer of Auralex, we kit out many of the top studios in the country, and that's why we also helped to provide the acoustic treatment for the studio where Zimmer was working on the music for Sherlock Holmes 2: Game of Shadows.

Tickets for Hans Zimmer's performances can be found here and are expected to sell-out.
