Seven Great Gibson/ Epiphone Semi-Acoustic Moments

Published: Fri August 29, 2014  News Feed
Few guitars look as stylish or are as iconic as the Gibson ES-335 and the other semi-hollow models from Epiphone, such as the Sheraton, Riviera and Dot. Here at Dolphin Music we're quite excited with the imminent arrival of the Limited-Edition Epiphone ES-335 Iced Tea Burst, so we decided to compile a selection of some unforgettable musical moments that feature these beautiful semi-acoustic electric guitars...enjoy!

Seven Great Semi-Acoustic Moments

1) The Beatles make a 'Revolution'
Why? John Lennon's fuzzy, dirty Epiphone Casino tone became the stuff of legend. He plugged it straight into the mixing desk, and proved semi-acoustics can kick some serious ***!

2) Chuck Berry Rolls all over Beethoven
Why?
When Chuck Berry sang 'Roll Over Beethoven', using his trustworthy ES-345, he wasn't just rockin' out: he was announcing a new era, saying that the rock'n'roll kids were finally taking over the older generation.

3) The Kinks really got us
Why?
'You Really Got Me' (released 50 years ago) was the rawest rock'n'roll song of the time. Dave Davies' Epiphone Casino, played through a distorted, fuzzy amp, changed rock forever. It was time for rock to get LOUD!

4) John Lee Hooker's Boom Boom Booming with The Blues Brothers
Why?
The Blues Borthers film, from 1980, introduced the blues to a whole new generation, and John Lee Hooker's version of  his classic Boom Boom Boom, playing his faithful Epiphone Sheraton, was one of its finest moments.

5) Oasis put Britain on the map... and on Noel's guitar
Why?
Oasis led the ressurgence of British music in the early 90s, and when Noel Gallagher walked onstage at their Maine Road concert, holding an Epiphone Sheraton customized with an Union Jack, he was responsible for one of defining moments of the era, and introduced that era's very own, iconic guitar (which, by the way, is being reissued!)

6) The Strokes bring forth the Modern Age
Why? The sound of Nick Valensi's P93-equipped Epiphone Riviera on the Strokes' 'The Modern Age' heralded the arrival of, well, the modern age! A new generation started to love semi-acoustic guitars and skinny jeans.

7) Marty McFly Invents Chuck Berry
Why?
Well, we ALL love Back To The Future, and this is one of the best moments, when Marty McFly covers Chuck Berry's 'Johnny B. Goode' and by accident "invents" Chuck Berry's own sound! For many of us, it was our first encounter with a Gibson Semi-Hollow guitar... in this case, a Gibson ES-345, like Berry's, of course! Trivia: the Marty McFly part was actually played by two persons: Mark Campbell and Tim May (who played the solo).
