New Akai APC Ableton Range
Akai's New Releases 2014 - APC40 mk2, APC Mini Launchpad MIDI Controllersby Danny Edwards
Akai have released some exciting new products at Musicmesse 2014. Here's a quick summary to keep you up to speed.
Our highlight is the Akai APC mini. We think it is going to be a real game changer in the budget controller market, and offers some fierce competition for the popular Novation Launchpad. Seamless integration with Ableton Live, an 8x8 grid, and 8 channel faders with 1 master fader puts the APC mini in a league of its own, setting a new benchmark for affordable MIDI controllers at a surprisingly brilliant price.
The APC40 mk2 has been upgraded from the flag-ship APC40 and carefully designed after taking on board customer feedback over the last five years. Some sensible layout changes have been made to please loyal Akai fans, whilst the APC40 mkII feels a lot more sleek than its predecessor. The next generation of APC40 is coming.
A lot of people have been waiting a long time to get their hands on this, and we can't wait until they hit the UK.
The APC Key 25 is a versatile addition to the Akai range. WIth a 25 key high-performance keyboard, 8 control knobs and a 5x8 clip-launch matrix, you have complete control over your sound. Designed for use with Ableton Live 9, but can be used as a general MIDI controller for all DAWs - we recommend this for music producers who want a controller that can do more.
The Rhythm Wolf analog drum machine has been a bit of a surprise. Affordable and versatile, this thing a 32-step sequencer, an analog drum machine and a bassline synth all in one. You end up with a compact analog groove box that would have cost you an absolute fortune a decade ago, that even includes velocity sensitivity. You lucky people!
And last but not least, the MPX16. This records and plays .WAV samples from any standard SD card (one included) and is powered by USB, making this extremely portable for on-the-go sampling. Samples are triggered with the 16 highly responsive MPC style pads, and can be recorded via 1/4 input or with the on-board microphone - you can even apply filters and envelopes to them! LCD and illuminated trigger pads make this compact sampler look great.
All the new APC controllers come with stacks of samples and plugins too. Each one also comes with Ableton Live Lite, so that's everything you need to get started coming in one package.

We think that people are going to go mad for the APC mini, and could even rival the ever-popular launchpad over the coming year.
