Boss & Roland Guitar Effects Pedals in 2014

by Danny Edwards

Boss have been kind to guitarists so far in 2014, with some exciting new effects pedals being released.

Boss ME-80 Guitar Pedal

The Boss ME-80 has learned from its predecessors and taken everything that worked well from the ME-70 and GT-100, and have produced one extremely versatile multi-effects pedal. You can pretty much get any sound with the ME80 thanks to the multitude of COSM amp models, 8 stomp pedals with access to the new MDP effects and an expression pedal. It has a built-in USB & MIDI interface allowing direct recording in the studio, ensuring maximum tone is maintained on studio tracks and allowing you to use your guitar as a midi controller. Pretty cool!

Roland have provided us with a good example of what the ME-80 is capable of:

GT-001 Guitar Desktop Processor

The GT-001 basically takes everything from the GT100 and packs it into a desktop processor that is ideal for a mobile rig or working in the studio. It is much more compact than the GT100, and the intuitive interface means you can dial in effects with no hassle. In addition to the regular guitar input, there is an XLR input to put vocals or acoustic guitar through it, and a built-in USB/midi interface to connect up with your DAW for studio fun. Here's what Steve Lukather from Toto thinks of it:

GP-10 Guitar Synth

If you want to create a unique sound then the GP10 guitar synth will definitely help you. This completely transforms your sound and can achieve authentic sounding analog synth, or be used as a multi-effects pedal similar to the ME & GT series of guitar pedals.

Take a look at the kind of things you can do with this uncanny synthesizer:

Boss OD-1X and DS-1X

And for those who are after pure simplicity - why not just get an overdrive/distortion and do it the old fashioned way? A great addition to any pedalboard or for stand alone use, these two pedals sound great.

If you are after something more subtle we recommend the OD-1X, or if you want to get some pure rock sounds go for the DS-1X.
