New Pioneer DJ Turntable PLX1000 - NOW IN STOCK!

We're all massive gearheads here at Dolphin Music, of course, so naturally we were all very excited when the Pioneer PLX-1000 Turntable finally landed at our warehouse. We took one to our office to unbox and take a closer look.

Unboxing the Pioneer PLX-1000 DJ Turntable

Our main DJ experts were impressed with it. The hype seems deserved... it's very well built, and considering Pioneer's long-standing position as one of the leading manufacturers of DJ gear, there's no doubt that the PLX-1000 ticks all boxes. One of the good points about it, straight out of the box, is that it has goldplated RCA outputs rather than having the cables already attached to it. They are the same type used in the disc players of Pioneer’s “TAD” high-class audio brand. The sound of analog records is faithfully reproduced with excellent sound quality by directly conveying the phono signal with stable plugs.

PLX-1000 DJ turntable - versatile tempo controlOf course, what most DJs want to know, is how the PLX-1000 compares to the classic Technics 1210's. Like the 1210, the new PLX-1000 is a quite basic and simple unit, solidly built, that should last you years. It is slightly heavier than the 1210 (by about 2kg).

The high-torque direct drive system of the PLX-1000 is better than that of the Technics 1210: it provides an even more stable rotation, achieving starting torque of at least 4.5kg·cm and reaching the fixed rotation speed within just 0.3 seconds (at 33 1/3 rpm) which is more than double as fast as the 1210, which takes 0.7s to reach 33 1/3 rpm. This could be particularly useful for hip-hop and scratch DJs.

A pretty cool feature is the wide, variable range of tempo: ±8%, ±16% and ±50%. These wide-ranging tempo controls expand the possibilities of DJ play. Also, simply pressing the “RESET” button instantly reverts to the fixed rotation speed at ±0%, wherever the control is at any given moment.

With those innovations, the main aim of the PLX-1000 seems to become a classic-style Turntable (with S-shaped tone arm etc) for the new generation of DJs. Older DJs who have always relied on their trustworthy 1210s are unlikely to feel tempted by the PLX-1000 (though, by all means, they should have a go!) But now that vinyl records are making a massive comeback, it's not far fetched to imagine a new generation of DJs who'll once again feel attracted to DJ-ing on actual vinyl records rather than CDs or MP3s. And it is those DJs that the new Pioneer PLX-1000 seems to be targetting. These DJs will fancy something new that is at the same time classic but also offering some cool new features.

Will it be as successful as the 1210? Or appreciated for as long? Who knows, but kudos to Pioneer for at least trying! So far, this new PLX-1000 seems very promising. Let's wait and see what the DJs out there think!

The Mysterious New Pioneer Vinyl Turntable At Musikmesse 2014

Pioneer to Rival Technics 1210?

Details are a little thin on the ground at the moment but the word coming out at Musikmesse 2014 is that Pioneer have indeed been working on a new vinyl turntable to rival the mighty Technics 1210's. Given the pedigree of Pioneer we think it's a safe bet they will match up in terms of build quality. As for features we're hearing that they've been made using the same patented techniques and may have a USB connection to fit into modern DJ setups.
