Who's Rockin' Rode Microphones?

By Hugh McKenna

Born out of Freedman electronics who were founded in 1967, Rode were one of the first companies to provide the project/home studio market with high quality, precision engineered microphones. Their range has expanded and profile increased greatly since the early 90's, with a huge range of artists using them in the studio and on-stage.

The Mic The Details Who's Using It?
Rode NT1-A

Something of a flagship mic for Rode. The NT1-A really delivers high end quality at project studio prices. Just check out Amy Winehouse recording on it's predecessor NT1with Mark Ronson.

The NT1-A's big brother, with the same clarity and Australian build quality. The NT2-A also evokes the classic condenser mics of the 50's & 60's with a smooth response.

Here's Nashville engineer John Merchant putting the mic through it's paces.

While they've made their reputation with great condenser microphones Rode also make a number of great dynamics. The M1 is a perfect accompaniment for the M2 and M3 condenser mics, studio quality sound playing live.

You know it's robust and dynamic when a great beatboxer like Dub FX is using one.

With its dual diaphragm design the NT2000 offers a good deal more versatility and a rich sound quality. Variable polar pattern, high pass filter and pad are features not often found in microphones regardless of price.

When you think of a stereo pair it's often drum overheads that first spring to mind. The NT5 certainly do a stellar job, as the video below demonstrates, however it's always rewarding to get creative in the studio. Try the NT5s on acoustic guitar for a huge stereo sound or as an XY pair for gang vocals.

Rode NT55 Matched Pair

If the NT5 are rock and roll then the NT55 are more refined classical. With cardioid & omni capsules the NT55 are ideal versatile mics to have on location and use in media and video production. Of course clarity and tonal balance never hurt in the studio, just check out who uses them along with his Classic II...

 Duff McKagan

Rode K2

Their Classic II valve condenser is really a legend amongst top engineers such as Paul Epworth and the K2 makes this high end quality more affordable.

Another Rode user is the engineer for the Soweto Gospel Choir. They've performed all around with world, alongside a diverse range of artists such as Bono, Queen, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and Peter Gabriel.

One of the Dolphin staff had the good fortune to work back stage for the Soweto Gospel Choir at Edinburgh Festival and spotted NT4 mics being used upstage for ambient sound and we can see some Stereo NT1-A mics here being used closer up.

Now you can have the greatest mics in the world but without obeying some of the fundamental rules you won't get great sound. Luckily Rode President Peter Freedman has helped produce a tutorial showing how to improve your mic technique in (almost) 60 seconds.
